Sunita Rani appeals for a quick return of her medals

NEW DELHI, Jan 5: Distance runner Sunita Rani today appealed to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to return her Asian Games medals "at the earliest" since she had been cleared of doping charges.

Sunita Rani, who was stripped of her gold and bronze medals won at the Busan Asian Games following a "positive" test for banned substance nandrolone, has been given clean chits from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Association of Athletics Federations both of whom have recommended that the charges against her be dropped.

"Now that I have been proved innocent, I appeal to the Olympic Council of Asia to return my medals at the earliest," Sunita Rani said.

Oca has said that the return of her medals was just a formality now.

Sunita Rani thanked the Indian Olympic Association and Amateur Athletic Federation of India for supporting her during turbulent times and believing in her innocence.

She specially thanked OCA secretary-general Randhir Singh for backing her throughout in the "fight against the injustice" meted out to her.

Sunita Rani had won gold in the women’s 1500m run and a bronze in 5,000m.

ICO’s Medical Commission upheld an appeal by India that there were discrepancies in the testing procedures at the Seoul laboratory and directed oca not to pursue the case any further. (PTI)

Australia face first home test defeat in four years

SYDNEY, Jan 5: Australia have to bat out the entire last day tomorrow to prevent going down to their first home test defeat in four years to resurgent England in the fifth and final cricket test at the Sydney cricket ground.

Nasser Hussain’s men, outclassed by the Australians in the previous four tests of the series, are on the verge of a tremendous victory having set the world champions an historically out-of-reach 452 runs for victory.

Australia, who have dominated world cricket in recent seasons, last lost a test match at home to England in the fourth boxing day test in Melbourne in December 1998 by 12 runs.

England, who declared their second innings at 452 for nine off 125.3 overs, made giant inroads into the vaunted Australian batting lineup in the 20 overs to stumps, removing Justin Langer (3), Matthew Hayden (2) and Ricky Ponting (11) cheaply.

At close today, Australia were trying to keep their heads above water at 91 for three with nightwatchman Andy Bichel, battling a fractured finger to reach his highest test score of 49 not out and Damien Martyn on 19.

Australia, needing 361 runs more to win, face a desperate rearguard to bat out a minimum 90 overs tomorrow to save the match with fine conditions forecast.

Yet again Australia’s top order batsmen failed to handle the pressure conditions exerted by England carrying over from the memorable last morning of the fourth test when chasing 107 for victory they lost five wickets before recovering to win. They failed twice again here.

Michael Vaughan smashed the flat Australian bowlers, clearly missing the wicket-taking experience of injured champion pair Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne, to finish with 183 - his eighth century in his last 12 tests.

Vaughan appeared unlucky to be given out lbw to Bichel ending a six and a half hour vigil, occupying 279 balls and including 27 fours and a six.

Vaughan and Hussain eclipsed a three-day-old ground record for the third wicket with a 189-run stand.

Mark Butcher and Hussain had broken the previous 66-year-old english record of 129 for the third wicket at the ground with their 166 in the first innings on Thursday.

Lee dismissed Hussain for 72 with a faint edge to Adam Gilchrist which had the english captain shaking his head in disbelief at the decision.

Lee finished with 3 for 132 off 31.3 overs and legspinner Stuart MacGill 3 for 120 off 41 overs.

Hussain called his last two batsmen in when Lee began bowling menacing short-pitched deliveries at tailender Steve Harmison, who crashed four fours in his spirited unbeaten 20.

As Australia came out to bat late today they faced the prospect of defying test history to topple England.

The highest winning chase in test cricket history is India’s 406 for four to beat the West Indies in Trinidad in April 1976, while no team has scored more than 276 in the last innings to win an SCG test.

Langer, Hayden and ponting fell to LBW decisions. Andy Caddick got Langer and Ponting, while Hoggard dismissed Hayden. (AFP)

Pakistan were thrashed by an innings and 142 runs to lose the series 2-0 today.

The Pakistanis’ match fee depends on seniority and status but ranges from an estimated 500 Pounds (800 Dollars) to 4,000 Pounds (6,400 Dollars). (AGENCIES)

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Jan 5: Even after netting first two goals, the strong side of Uttar Pradesh could not maintain their pressure and saw their lead being equalised by Chandigarh in a group-B league match of the ongoing North-Zone under-19 Football Championship underway at GGM Science College grounds, here today.

The first draw 2-2 match in this championship gave both sides one point each which will be counted for when the league round will be over.

First goal for Uttar Pradesh was scored in the 6th minute by Mohammad Afroz Khan in the 6th minute of the match on a pass from Amit Singh. After taking early lead, UP forward line never looked back and continued their scathing attack on the Chandigarh goal.

UP’s attacking strategy yielded results when Mohd Afroz struck his second goal in the 31st minute after getting a well calculated pass from Vir Singh.

Two goals down Chandigarh, finding themselves in the troubled waters, started playing a do or die battle. This change in the frame of mind helped Chandigarh frontline to initiate a couple of deadly moves within a few minutes.

After the drinks, Chandigarh continued their efforts for an equaliser amidst foiling some challenging attacks by the UP. However, Chandigarh attained their goal and turned the score 2-2 in the 68th minute of the match. Vinay had netted the equaliser in the 68th minute on a pass from Inderpreet.
