Going for re-evaluation

Sir,

We are living in a democratic set up and, as such, are within our rights to give vent to our genuine feelings and at times represent to correct for a wrong dealing. Examinations can have so many flaws, particularly in the present-day scenario, when there is a mad race to push our way forward, come what may be the resource! For last couple of sessions I was pained to observe as what is the notion of those students who fail in their exams, and apply for re-evaluation? Perhaps the first escape route they find, after they come to know about their failure is, "come what may, I am going for re-evaluation". Well, one is within ones rights to do the same. But who should apply for re-evaluation and with what expectations?

Normally a student, who fares very well in examination and is confident enough, expects a particular grade in that exam. Sometimes students are truly shocked to see their result or for that purpose marks awarded by the evaluator. On the face value after getting the marks sheet, it hammers him that something has gone wrong somewhere. To this, his friends and relatives join him to conclude that, what the hell are these evaluators doing? Evaluations has become a mockery! Granted, there can be exceptions where we have found some lapses with evaluation and once confirmed, they have been punished and rightly so, as none can take this serious job passively.

What has prompted me to write this letter, is my concern for all my students, who, without giving a thought, apply for re-evaluation, taking it for granted that something providential may happen after opting for re-evaluation. I wonder how a student expects to go through when he attempts half-hearted two or three questions with 90 percent wrong sentences. In certain cases one is shocked to find that a student, either who has just re-written the question paper back on the answer sheet or left it 95 percent blank, and still hopes that re-evaluation may give him a reprieve. As per my observation 95 percent of students who apply for re-evaluation, apply just for the sake of re-evaluation and they don't get more than 15 percent to 20 percent of total marks in re-evaluation. What a pathetic trend! Is it genuine on their part to expect that they can improve their position? It is pure wastage. To many it may seem just wastage of money and just a futile exercise. But I personally feel, it is something more than that. It is pure failure and wrong assessment of ones earlier performance. It also tells a lot about his/her personality as he/she may be shaping to find short cuts and easy passage. In certain, cases some students may be mis-led; well, you apply for the re-evaluation, God willing, everything will be o-kay. It is surely poor logic that one is expecting something that is not there, though, exceptional cases cannot be generalized.

I don't want to discourage students who can have their genuine grievances or who feel let down. But for God's sake, a teacher would not like his pupils to adopt unrealistic approach either towards their results or their life in general. We may fail our attempt but that does not mean we stop there. "Failure can be a pillar of success", but simply not on a platter. "First deserve then desire."

A Vital link

Sir,

This has reference to the editorial. ‘Second Bridge over Chenab’ published in the Daily Excelsior. The editorial is worth appreciating because it has highlighted the problem facing the Akhnoor people in a proper perspective. The bridge becomes an important issue during elections; but once elections are over, it becomes a matter of least importance.

The Akhnoor brige is strategically important, besides connecting Akhnoor with the rest of India. It should be given importance by both the Central and State Government.

Tobacco legislation

Sir,

It refers to Union Cabinent's decision to impose a total ban on advertisements of tobacco-products in the country. It is not understood why our rulers do not take ultimate step to impose a total ban on sale of injurious tobacco-products especially cigarettes which are proven health hazard responsible for killing of millions of people every year! Government-spending on tobacco-related diseases accounts much more than revenue earned by sale of these products. Smoking starts in youngsters as fashion and status symbol. It does not feel good in initial stages, but later it develops as addiction. Union Government should ban manufacture of cigarettes and other tobacco-products like 'gutkha' at least in interest of families of smokers at least which are the worst sufferers in case of fatality of smokers, defying all pressures from anti-public but influential tobacco-lobby in the country!
