Critique
of Empty Rituals By Lalit Gupta JAMMU, Dec 13: Exposing the hypocracies that in fact are a camouflage for hidden desires and establishing the irrelevance of many empty rituals in todays context, the play "Mahanirvan" was performed at the Abhinav Theatre, here today. Second production of the ongoing three play drama festival by Shivani Cultural Society, the drama is written in Marathi by Suresh Alekar, translated in Hindi by Vasant Dev. Directed by Anoop Verma, it is a satire on the after-death-rituals and their appropriation according to ones convenience and changing social references. The plot of the play is centered around the family of Bhau a dead man, who leaves behind wife Rama, and son Nana. The wife, Rama, is attracted to one of the pyre bearers. The neighbours disappear when they come to know that the old crematorium has been closed and the body has to taken to a far-away burning ground. The story takes a twist when the dead man, Bhau, who can only be seen by his son, becomes adamant to be consigned to flames in the old cremation ground only. Oscillating between Ramas attraction to one of the mourners and Bhaus decaying body, the play meanders through sheer comic to absurd and ends in a scathing criticism of moral and social values which are being carried like dead wood. Todays production saw the actors giving a flowing performance. Especially Mitali Gupta as Rama seemed to be gliding and flowing in her role. The facility with which she moved from one rasa to another, owes it to her training in classical Indian dance. Ajay Khajuria as the dead man Bhau, showed his acting prowess in lengthy saloloquies. He also successfully brought out the gradual onset of decay in the dead mans body awaiting cremation through body movements and changes in his dialogue delivery. Vikram Sharma as the son, Nana, was also impressive in his role, especially in highlighting the ingrained absurdity of situations. The design of the play directed by Anoop Verma, was marked with poetic compositions, where special effort was made in breaking the visual monotony of actors placements in group sequences. The light design played an important part in highlighting individual sequences, which flashed off and on continuously. The background music by Arvind was appropriate to the demands of the dramatic situations. The make-up was by Kamal Sharma and costumes by Urmil Khosa. Other who acted in the play included Isha, Karan Singh, Nishant Dev Singh, Bhanu Partap, Satish Singh Jasrotia, Bhupeshwar Singh, Mangal Singh, Saurav Sharma, Amit Khajuria, Gaurav Sharma, Kunal Dhavan, Naresh Abrol. Ashok Khajuria was the chief guest of the show. Tomorrow, performance of Hadsa-Haqiqat will mark the last day of the festival. |

Traffic Police to adopt Delhi pattern of challan Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 13: Traffic Police, Jammu is all set to adopt a "professional way" of the challans especially for the wrong parkings and overspeeding. "Under the new concept, which was likely to be sent by the Traffic Police department for the Government approval shortly, the computerised challans would be sent to the houses of defaulters", SSP Traffic S D Singh told Excelsior today. Admitting that the system of challaning the vehicles on roads was fast becoming "outdated", Mr Singh, who had taken over as SSP Traffic in August this year, said he had been to New Delhi recently to study the concept of computerised challaning. "The Delhi Police has designed a software which enabled the police to get identity and address of a defaulter after feeding the registration number, colour, model and company of the vehicle", he said, adding "we too are planning to introduce the new concept in Jammu pending an approval from the Government". "In view of heavy traffic congestion on the City roads, its not possible to chase a vehicle if it managed to escape after violating signal by the Traffic cops. Under the new system, the vehicle would be challaned and a copy of challan sent to the owners house", Mr Singh said. Stressing the need for a single agency to monitor different kind of works in the City, the SSP Traffic said this could go a long way in strictly enforcing the traffic rules and discipline. "Such a necessity is being more felt now since City is getting expanded very fast", he pointed out. Saying that every effort is being made to deploy "mature officers and staff" in sensitive areas of the City, Mr Singh, who had served as police chief of Kupwara and Leh districts, admitted that "a lot more needs to be done on this front in view of limited availability of staff". He said action has been taken against the Traffic Police officials wherever the charges levelled by the complainant are confirmed after the investigations. "Several measures have been initiated to streamline traffic in the City within the available routes", Mr Singh said and pointed out that recently the Traffic police had ordered one way traffic on Women College, Parade Ground road and Panjtirthi Chowk-Mubarak Mandi road, which were worst affected during the peak hours. Some more roads are likely to be converted into one way traffic very soon, he added. In another step towards de-congestion in the City, the Traffic Police, according to Mr Singh, was planning to use the Fly Over for commercial vehicles especially the matadors. The matadors plying on the Fly Over will take off from Women College, Parade Ground and will have stoppage at a rotary near the Vigilance Organisation office and Indira Chowk. Another stop is being considered near Resham Ghar. The department has a proposal to purchase a Red Speed Camera to detect overspeeding and violation of signal as and when the finances are available. Another proposal is to deploy close circuit cameras on main chowks. Meanwhile, the Traffic Police has registered a sharp increase in revenue collections in the months of August to November this year. Total revenue collected in the four months is to the tune of Rs 89.12 lakh. Revenue collected during the corresponding period last year was only Rs 61.14 lakh. |
