India might field two spinners in the second Test

ADELAIDE, Dec 11: Emboldened by the encouraging start to the series, Indian captain Sourav Ganguly today hinted of going into the second cricket Test against Australia beginning tomorrow with a double spin attack to put some pressure on the hosts.

The last-minute addition of left-arm spinner Murali Kartik to the squad has thrown up a new option for the Indians and Ganguly was working out on the best composition of the spin attack.

"It has been very hot and we have to look at the possibility if we could play two spinners here. The wicket here has a history of supporting spin," Ganguly said on the eve of the match.

"We are still deciding the composition of the bowling attack. We will look at the wicket tomorrow morning and then decide," he said.

The form of off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has been a matter of concern for the team management as was evident by the SOS sent to Kartik.

"I do not deny he (Harbhajan) has to improve but he has worked really hard in the nets. He has to improve and the quicker he improves the better it would be for the team," he said.

With both teams boasting of a formidable batting line-up bowling will hold the key to success and the Indians are keen to field their best attack in the crucial game.

Harbhajan’s insipid show in the Brisbane Test has also forced the team management to explore the option of bringing in the experienced Anil Kumble who missed the first Test.

"Kumble has got 350 plus wickets, so he will bring a lot of experience and quality to the team. If it (wicket) is dry he could come handy," Ganguly said.

The Indian captain disagreed that the veteran leg spinner was more of a seam bowler than a traditional spinner.

"I don’t agree with the viewpoint that he is the third seamer in the side. He is a skidder of course but not a seamer."

Ganguly said he was expecting a more fired-up Australian attack but added that the team’s confidence-boosting display in Brisbane would hold the side in good stead here.

"We have generally not played well in the first Test of a series but we performed reasonably well in Brisbane. It is a new test and we will have to start from scratch."

"I know they are going to come hard and we will have to be up for it. We are all prepared for this Test here because this is a good wicket and we all want to do well."

The stylish left-hander said his young team was determined to make amends for failures during their last tour here and ready to experiment with new ideas.

"The difference between this tour and last one is that we want to do things differently than last time. We want to prove that we are a capable lot and we can do it."

"The way we have played in the last 18 months overseas it has instilled a lot of confidence in the boys." (PTI)

India drop Harbhajan for second match

ADELAIDE, Dec 11: Desperate to plug the bowling loopholes, India today dropped out-of-form Harbhajan Singh and flew in left-arm spinner Murali Kartik for probable inclusion in the team for the second cricket Test against Australia starting here tomorrow.

Kartik, brought in as a last-minute addition to the Indian squad, has been included in the 12-player list for the match with indications that the visitors could opt for a double-spin attack on a dry Adelaide Oval track.

Harbhajan’s omission was on the cards after a series of indifferent performances and his insipid show in the drawn first test at Brisbane forced the team management to take the harsh step.

Reflecting the visitors’ dilemma, the 27-year-old Kartik, who was initially ignored for the Australian tour despite a good performance in a recent tri-series at home, was suddenly called to join the squad.

The experienced Anil Kumble is almost certain to make it to the playing eleven and if the Indians also pick kartik, seamer Ashish Nehra would be asked to do the 12th man duty.

After the encouraging start to the four-match Test series, the Indians are keen to bolster their bowling resources to contain the formidable Aussie batsmen, a fact reflected in the decisions today.

Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who has always backed Harbhajan, said he would have another close look at the track before deciding on the final eleven for the "crucial" tie. (PTI)

Murali Kartik to join Indian team

ADELAIDE, Dec 11: Left-arm spinner Murali Kartik is set to join the Indian team here late tonight in response to an SOS by the team management to bolster their bowling attack.

Kartik, unlucky to be left out of the original touring party in the first place, is reinforcing the team as an additional, 17th member of the side and not as any replacement, according to manager Shivlal Yadav.

"Decision on Kartik as taken last evening and he would be up for selection in the team for the second Test," said Yadav.

Kartik’s family sources in New Delhi also confirmed that the bowler has left for Australia but refused to reveal further details. (PTI)

Murali puts England under pressure

KANDY (Sri Lanka), Dec 11: Spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan grabbed two big wickets as England faltered after a bright start in the second cricket Test against Sri Lanka here today.

Off-spinner Muralitharan removed free-stroking openers Marcus Trescothick and Michael Vaughan before England reached 163-4 at stumps on a controversial second day in reply to Sri Lanka’s first-innings total of 382.

Muralitharan threatened to alter the course of the innings after left-handed Trescothick (36) and skipper Vaughan (52) had put on 89 for the opening wicket in just 18 overs with their aggressive batting on a slow turning track.

Trescothick was caught by Tillakaratne Dilshan at silly-point on the stroke of tea after hitting five fours.

Vaughan failed to read the line of a delivery that turned the other way, edging it to Mahela Jayawardene at slip after smashing eight fours in his attractive eighth Test half-century.

England slipped from 89 for no loss to 119-4 in the space of nine overs before Graham Thorpe (20 not out) and Paul Collingwood (19 not out) denied Sri Lanka further success.

England also had a tough time on the field as Sri Lanka, led by tail-ender Dinusha Fernando’s maiden Test half-century, added 104 for their last two wickets before the innings ended on a controversial note.

Last-man Muralitharan was initially given not out after left-arm spinner Ashley Giles’s delivery had clipped the off-stumps’s bail.

Umpires Daryl Harper (Australia) and Aleem Dar (Pakistan) failed to notice the ball brushing the stump before being persuaded by the England skipper to consult RV umpire Peter Manuel of Sri Lanka.

Muralitharan was then ruled out.

Fernando frustrated England the most as he hammered an unbeaten 51 in only his second Test, adding 76 for the ninth wicket with Kumar Dharmasena (29) and 28 for the last with Muralitharan (19).

England heaved a sigh of relief when giles succeeded in claiming the last two wickets in the afternoon session to finish with 5-116, his third haul of five or more wickets in an innings in 29 tests.

The tourists could get just one wicket in the morning session after Sri Lanka had resumed at 277-7.

Fast bowler Andrew Flintoff was the wicket-taker when he had skipper Hashan Tillakaratne (45) caught hooking by Mark Butcher at long-leg.

Fernando batted sensibly to shatter England’s hopes of making short work of the Sri Lankan tail.

He, however, failed to impress as a new-ball bowler as he was punished by Trescothick and Vaughan to concede 29 runs in his opening three overs before being replaced.

The Sri Lankan captain was forced to press Muralitharan into the attack after 13 overs in a bid to contain the England openers. The spinner did not let his captain down as he dismissed Trescothick and Vaughan in his five overs.

Off-spinner Dharmasena had Butcher (four) stumped before left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas trapped Nasser Hussain (10) leg-before to send England reeling at 119-4. (AFP)

Charges framed against Kale by disciplinary committee

KOLKATA, Dec 11: Acting on the inquiry commissioner’s findings, the cricket board’s disciplinary committee today framed charges against tainted Maharashtra batsman Abhijit Kale and decided to issue a show cause notice asking him to explain his conduct.

The three-member disciplinary committee, which had a three-hour meeting here, decided to issue the show cause notice after it found a "prima facie case against Kale and framed charges", BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya told reporters here.

"The committee deliberated on the report of inquiry commissioner and other documents and unanimously decided that a prima facie case exists to proceed further on the allegations against Kale.

"Accordingly the committee framed charges and decided that a show cause notice be issued to Kale in accordance with the memorandum and rules and regulations of the BCCI," Dalmiya said.

The board’s legal adviser U N Banerjee, who was also consulted during the meeting, said Kale would be given 15 days’ time to give his reply to the show cause.

Dalmiya refused to spell out how soon a final decision would be reached on the matter by the committee, which includes two BCCI vice presidents in Kamal Morarka and Ranbir Singh Mahendra.

Kale, already suspended from the game, was accused by two national selectors, Kiran More (West) and Pranab Roy (East), of offering them Rs 10 lakh each for a berth in the Australia-bound Indian team.

When asked about the court case filed by Kale, the legal adviser said it was a different issue as the cricketer had filed the case challenging his suspension whereas disciplinary committee would consider the overall charge of bribery against him and decide accordingly.

As per the by-laws of the BCCI, any decision by the disciplinary committee will be final and it does not need to be endorsed even by the working committee.

The board had decided to suspend Kale and appoint Rao, chairman of Bar Council of India, as inquiry commissioner to look into the matter after the two national selectors submitted a written complaint to the board president immediately after the triangular series final here last month.

Rao held a day-long hearing at Visakhapatnam on November 29 during which kale along with three national selectors deposed before him.

Rao submitted his report to the board on December 5 leading to the setting-up of of the disciplinary committee to decide the matter. (PTI)
