Polluted city

Sir,

Refer article ''Keep City Clean'' the Daily Excelsior dated 30th Nov. While going through it I felt that there are still people who feel to bring the broad items, which need attention to ensure health of people. I personally congratulate Dr Gurmeet Singh.

I would like to support your advice and express my views on two items i.e leakage in drinking water pipes and garbage problem. About the pollution of drinking water I have been writing to Chief Engineer PHE and even made countless verbal requests to his officers for the last many years but unfortunately that Deptt has not even the courtesy to acknowledge the communication. This leakage problem was even highlighted by a top most physician Dr K L Chaudhary who had warned the Govt of the population taking the shape of epidemic of hepatitis. This also did not create any impression on the concerned authorities. So how can one expect any action on their part.

Other most burning problem is of garbage dumping. On this also I tried to invite attention of the Jammu Municipal Corporation as well as got the problem to the notice of the Minister for Housing and Urban Development personally too. Except verbal assurance nothing was done. This problem has mostly affected the area of Bhagwati Nagar and Mohinder Nagar. Whole of the garbage of city is carted and dumped in Tawi river bund by the side of Bhagwati Nagar. This practice is continuing since last many years. Most of the vehicular traffic on the link road of Municipal Vehicles carting garbage running for more than 10 hours a day spreading obnoxious smell and then dumping it near the very nose of the inhabitants of this area. This has bestowed a cover of flies to this whole area wherever and whenever you are in this area flies cover you and whole of your belongings. It clearly shows how serious is the present Govt about the health of people. As a social activist I have been ponting out many issues to the Govt but feel disappointed when there is no response whatsoever. This was the case with the previous Govt too. I had ticked that Govt as deaf. Inspite of present Govt's commitment on taking over the reins of the administration, that it will ensure proper working and transparency in the Govt Departments, nothing tangible has been done so far. But I am sorry to say that they have also adopted the same deaf ear policy. A helpless senior law abiding citizen can pray to Almighty God to take care of lacs of poor and weak and helpless people who are not even heard and not to speak of redressal of their problems. Should I conclude that improve- ment of working culture in the deptt and transparency was mere myth.

Cultural invasion

Sir,

Due to rapid expansion of electronic media, Indian culture is losing its identity. The impact is so strong that we are being forced to think and behave according to western notions of life. We are again being colonised. The channel war is so hot that they can do any thing to out do one another. The most potent thing with them is sex and sleaze. Some TV serials and movies have nothing more to show than nudity. This has led the younger generation astray. This in turn has increased crime in metropolitan cities. Rape, murder, and other offences are carried out in a Bollywood style. Moreover, our food habit, life style is also changing. Everything western is sacrosanct and every local thing is profane. If we cannot address this problem at this time, we cannot tackle this tomorrow also.

Such channels should be banned which are affecting our culture and other day to day habits.

Yours etc...
Rahul Pathania
Samba.
