Laxmans knock the only saving grace for India BRISBANE, Nov 30: V V S Laxmans 74 was the only saving grace for the Indians who were restricted to 208 for nine declared in their first innings by the Queensland Academy of Sports on the second day of the three-day cricket match here today. The touring Indians batted disastrously to finish their innings with a first innings deficit of 96 runs that was swelled further with the hosts having reached 79 for two in their second innings at stumps. Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly had said before the start of the game that it was difficult to achieve a result in a three-day game but the hosts intended to do exactly the same on the critical final day tomorrow. "We for sure are looking to press the issue," declared Lee Carsledine, the first innings centurion, who was unbeaten on 31 in the second essay at close. Starting the day at 17 for three, the Indians suffered an immediate blow when Ganguly was dismissed for six in the team total of 26 for 4. Laxman then played an elegant knock of 74 runs from 150 balls in 217 minutes which included 10 fours and a six before a delivery from off-spinner Chris Simpson hurried on to him and bent back his off-stump. He jumped from 50 to 74 in a mere 11 deliveries as he opened out in the afternoon after digging in his heels in the morning session. Laxman shared a useful stand of 77 from 220 balls with Rahul Dravid, who looked neat in his 38 runs before tamely lobbing a catch at short midwicket off fast bowler Joe Dawes. Laxman played marvellous drives through the offside and once even went down on his knees to smash off-spinner Simpson over midwicket fence for six but his dismissal came at the wrong time for the Indians. He had built up a swift stand of 42 runs from 43 balls for the sixth wicket with Sadgopan Ramesh (20) before his dismissal cut short what appeared to be a certain century. Ramesh once again wasted a very good start by dashing down the wicket for a non-existent single and and failed to regain ground after being turned back too late by his partner Parthiv Patel. Ajit Agarkar, playing his first match on the tour, contributed a valuable 18 before being dismissed by Magoffin. The home team lost an early wicket when Chris Simpson (5) departed leg before wicket to Irfan Pathan but then they made good use of the remaining overs. The home team had powered to a score of 79 for two by close with Carsledine (31) and Daniel Payne (35) sharing a second wicket stand of 67 runs in 72 minutes. Indians got something to cheer about at the fag end of the day when Payne fell leg before in the first over of part-time off-spinner Virender Sehwag. (PTI) |
Aussies not invincible: Laxman BRISBANE, Nov 30: Star middle-order batsman VVS Laxman feels world champions Australia are beatable and his team had to the potential to turn the tables on them in the current tour down under. "Their results show they are one of the best sides ever in Test cricket but then we feel they are beatable," remarked Laxman after stroking an elegant 74 against Queensland Academy of Sports here today. "You have to look about your strengths instead of thinking about oppositions strong points," said Laxman "we certainly have the potential to do it." "This team has really done well abroad for the past one and a half years or so. The team is improving and we are travelling a lot better than we used to do before." Laxman preferred not to look at the negatives of this tour and instead declared he had his personal targets to contribute to teams success. "Look at it this way, (Sadagopan) Ramesh and Sachin (Tendulkar) got runs in the first game and Rahul (Dravid) looked very well in this game before he unfortunately got out," said Laxman. "I have personal targets but it very much depends on the circumstances because I bat at number six. But I am really looking forward to do well and play match-winning knocks." Laxman said since his return to international cricket he has been averaging above 50 for the past two years and he really would like to push his present career average of 45.00 towards the magical mark. "Ive played really well in the last two years but more than the average I want to play match-winning knocks for my country." Laxman declared he had learnt a lot on the last tour of Australia in 1999-2000 even though the team itself suffered a disastrous 0-3 drubbing. "It was a great learning experience for me. My game really changed after that tour. These were different wickets and I realized I could play more strokes. "I feel if you settle down, you could probably play more strokes in Australia than even in India!" Laxman said he was really disappointed with his catching in the finals of the triangular series in Kolkata recently and hoped he had exhausted his bad luck in that game. He felt good about his knock against academy team today and said it could be an interesting days play tomorrow. "Im happy with this first game as I was really disappointed at missing out in Victoria because of ill-health. "The most important thing was I could occupy the crease and bat for four hours." "This wasnt really a mediocre bowling. I thought they bowled really good line and length and the left-armer (Scott Bryant) really swung the ball very well last evening." Laxman said those who missed out on a good outing in the first innings would love to have another crack tomorrow. "A few batters are not among runs and it would be nice if they have a few under their belt tomorrow," said Laxman. "If set a target we could also go for a win, it would be great to have a win behind us before the first test." (PTI) |
Gambhir slams ton as India A make 203 for three PUNE, Nov 30: Opener Gautam Gambhir scored an unbeaten ton as India A scored 203 for three on the second day of the second cricket Test match against Sri Lanka A at the Nehru Stadium here today. Gambhir (117 no) struck 17 boundaries in his 183 ball knock as the Indians gave a fitting reply to the visitors, who were bowled out for 340 runs in their first innings. Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 255 for three, Sri Lankan batsmen were wrecked by a five wicket haul by pacemen Amit Bhandari as their middle order failed to capitalise on the impressive foundation. Left-arm spinner Murali Karthik, who missed the first Test due to flu, chipped in with two wickets. Rohan Gavaskar (28 no) was accompanying Gambhir at the crease at the draw of stumps. (PTI) |
Reid appointed bowling coach for Indian team NEW DELHI, Nov 30: Former Australian left-arm paceman Bruce Reid was today appointed as the bowling coach of the Indian cricket team for its 82-day tour of Australia. The cricket board decided to appoint Reid after a working committee meeting here today. Concerned over the thrashing the Indian bowlers received in the opening encounter against Victoria, the team management had sought the services of the left-handed seamer as the bowling coach for the gruelling two and half month series. The team management felt that a seasoned campaigner like Reid will do a lot of good to a relatively inexperienced Indian attack comprising Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar and rookies Lakshmipathy Balaji and Irfan Pathan. Reid, who earlier coached the Zimbabwe team on their recent tour of Australia, had said on Friday that he was ready to accept the bowling coach offer from the Indian board. Reid, who gave nothing away through a nagging line during his playing days, took 113 wickets from 27 matches at an impressive average of 24.63. (PTI) |
