Holland beat Australia to retain Champions Trophy

AMSTELVEEN (Holland), Aug 24: Riding on a rare combination of individual brilliance and great teamwork, Holland overcame Australia 4-2 in the final to retain the title in the 25th Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament at the Wagener Stadium here today.

It was the seventh champions trophy success for the Dutch and deservingly so for having played consistently well through out the week-long tournament, especially after escaping a certain defeat against India in their opening match when they came back from 0-3 to 4-3 in the last seven minutes.

For the Aussies, who had lost 3-5 to the Dutch in the league, a second place finish was some consolation for their lacklustre show at the Cologne edition last year where they had finished a poor fifth.

Matthijs Brouwer (20th), Ronald Brouwer (29th), Teun De Nooijer (62nd) and Karel Klaver (66th) ensured a Dutch triumph, while Craig Victory (29th) and troy elder (60th) kept the Aussies in the hunt.

The teams sizzled with pace and power in the first-half that had plenty of goalmouth action to keep the 8,000 capacity crowd on the edge of their seats.

Both the sides opted for an open play that facilitated flowing attacks and counters.

The Dutch looked distinctly the better organised with Teun De Nooijer, as always, prompting the home team attacks with some shrewd scheming.

The home team though enjoyed a slight edge, they had to keep a sharp eye on the Aussies who were quick to pounce on the smallest of openings.

The Australians had to contend with tight marking and a solid deep defence which gave little away. Thus, they were required to work hard as the Dutch seemed to read their setplays.

So much so that the first-half witnessed quality tactical play with each team trying to outwit the other.

The Dutch seized the initiative when skipper Jeroen Delmee found Mattijs brouwer deep in the Aussie circle. Brouwer cleverly flick the ball in, triggering massive celebrations in the stands.

Just before half-time, the pace was stepped up, and two goals materialised in the same minute. First, victory scored off a rebound from a penalty corner, and the Dutch swiftly retaliated through Ronald Brouwer who was set up by De Nooijer at the top of the circle.

The Aussies pressed hard in the second-half, forcing several penalty corners, but success eluded them, until elder flicked home from a penalty corner to put Australia back in the game at 2-2.

However, the genius of De Nooijer came into play as the dutch forward went in on a solo run, along the goal-line and flicked past the goalkeeper from a near-impossible angle for what could be rated as one of the best goals of the tournament.

As if to make sure of the success, De Nooijer put through Klaver, who capped a superlative run with a delightful flick past the goalkeeper to give the dutch a virtually unbeatable lead.

Final positions of teams:

1. Netherlands; 2. Australia; 3. Pakistan; 4. India; 5. Argentina; 6. Germany.

Argentina beat Germany 2-1

AMSTELVEEN: Pan American champions Argentina beat Germany 2-1 in the first classification encounter to take fifth place in the 25th Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament here today.

For the winners, Mario Almada and Matias Vila scored after both teams failed to break the deadlock in the first half. With the win the Argentines have booked their place in next year’s Champions Trophy to be held in Pakistan.

After the disappointing loss to Australia yesterday, the Argentines took time to settle down with the tight marking German team keeping Jorge Lombi and Mario Almada at bay.

In a listless first half both teams failed to make any headway. The ‘developmental team’ of Germany, who have managed to score only six goals and conceded an astounding 23 goals in their five league matches, found it difficult to penetrate the Argentine defence.

Two minutes into the second half, striker Mario Almada opened the account for the Pan American Champions with a brilliant reverse flick from the top of the circle. Matias Vila (61') dragged in Argentina’s second goal from a penalty corner.

Sebastian Draguhn deflected in Germany’s only consolation goal in an indirect penalty corner conversion following a Ulrich Klaus shot. After securing an Olympic berth, by winning the Pan American Championship just before this tournament, with this 2-1 victory over Germany, Argentina now also keep their place in the elite six-nation Champions Trophy. India fail to break the jinx, go down 3-4 to Pak

AMSTELVEEN, Aug 24: Thrice in the lead, India failed to break the jinx and went down 3-4 to Pakistan to finish fourth in the 25th Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament at the Wagener Stadium here today.

India muffed chances galore and paid the ultimate penalty of not getting on to the podium. In a match, where conversion of even a half chance mattered, India missed virtual sitters in both halves, while Pakistan made the most of the chances that came their way.

Jugraj Singh, Prabhjot Singh and Deepak Thakur scored for India. Sohail Abbas scored a brace while Kashif Jawad and Rehan Butt sounded the board once each for Pakistan.

In a repeat of last edition’s match at Cologne, where India led 3-1 before eventually losing by the same margin to their arch-rivals to finish fourth there, India again paid the price of having a mediocre defence and midfield and conceded the winning goal two minutes before the close that left them with no option of a counterattack.

Rehan butt yet again proved to be the nemesis for India. He had scored the winning goal in cologne last year, a feat he repeated this afternoon as well.

This is the first time India has lost to Pakistan in Amsterdam.

In 1982, India had beaten Pakistan to clinch the bronze with present coach Rajinder Singh scoring a hat-trick in the match that remains till now the best Indian showing in this tournament. As expected, both the teams started off under pressure. Pakistan under pressure because of Friday’s shocking 4-7 defeat to India while the Indians playing carefully in the midfield and defence so that they don’t repeat last Champions Trophy bronze-medal play-off mistakes against Pakistan which saw them lose the match.

Rythmn was a problem with both teams but India had the edge as Bimal Lakra in the midfield, Jugraj Singh and Dilip Tirkey were having a good match. Even Viren Rasquinha was throwing himself all over the turf trying to stop the Pakistan forwards. Some of his runs upfront were also very impressive.

Pakistan earned their first penalty corner in the 13th minute but Sohail Abbass was off target. Gagan Ajit Singh came midway into the first half and the attack suddenly had that extra bite. It was only because of some superb goalkeeping by Ahmed Alam that Gagan was prevented from scoring after picking up two consecutive rebounds of Alam’s pads.

In the 25th minute, Jugraj started off a move that saw the ball move to Gagan and then Prabhjot was stopped in the circle with India being awarded a stroke by umpire Saladino Edmundo of Argentina.

Jugraj beat Ahmed Alam by flicking high to give India the lead 1-0.

Two minutes later, India would have increased the lead but a move started by viren to Dhanraj and then Gagan was saved brilliantly by Ahmed Alam.

Pakistan equalised in the 31st minute when Sohail Abbass flicked in superbly to beat Devesh Chauhan.

But right on the clock with around seconds left for the break, India took the lead. Dhanraj raced into the centre, gave the ball to Deepak Thakur who flicked into the circle for Gagan Ajit who saw his shot rebounding off Alam’s pads but just as the umpire was turning to point for a penalty corner the ball rolled and Prabhjot lunged to tap the ball in past Alam. At the break, India led 2-1. It was another brilliant move that saw India regain the lead in the 48th minute. Bimal Lakra picked up the ball in the midfield and threw it up for Baljit Dhillon who sped into the circle and with a reverse-stick shot towards goal where Deepak Thakur was on the line to superbly deflect it into goal.

Desperate for a equaliser, Pakistan again attacked and earned their seventh penalty corner but Dilip Tirkey was there to deflect it away.

India had three sharp chances but couldn’t convert.

Finally, Pakistan earned their eighth penalty corner and this time Sohail Abbas was on target as his low flick beat Devesh Chauhan who was expecting a rising ball.

Three goals all, it was anybody’s game now. Yet another thrilling match being written into the already thick manual of India-Pakistan matches.

Prabhjot had the best chance of the game when he only had Alam to beat but his shot hit the post and came back but Prabhjot’s second shot also sailed over the cross-piece.

But with just two minutes to go, Pakistan found the space and Rehan Butt who had given victory to Pakistan in the last Champions Trophy found the ball in the circle and drew devesh out to flick the ball into the goal. Pakistan had the lead with just over a minute left.

Salim Khalid earned a yellow as tackles became rougher and Pakistan with ten men held together a last Indian charge. (UNI)

Sports infrastructure : Is it the lasting solution?

By Rajesh Dhar

Rubbish ! Why the slogan of "lack of sports infrastructure" in the state remains the unstopable cry of the sports lovers, promoters and players at the time when even the available infrastructure in the state is not used properly. The sports scribes including this columnist too, exaggerate things about sports infrastructure in their write-ups rather make a lot of hue and cry for not having sufficient infrastructure in the state. Certainly this slogan receives hype and hoopla more than it deserved.

Though development and renovation of sports infrastructure is the need of the hour, yet the non-utilization of the available infrastructure is the matter of concern, which needs a serious introspection.

Everytime the state fails to perform at the higher level, we make an excuse of not having sufficient facilities and infrastructure available in the state. No doubt, the state lacks facilities in many sports disciplines but at the same time one cannot rule it out that the state shows dismal performances even in those sports disciplines where you have the sufficient and standard infrastructure available like Hockey, Golf, Swimming and Billiards and Snookers.

Moreover, to talk of our credibility, image and place in the sports disciplines like Table-Tennis, Badminton, Athletics and different kinds of martial arts is to flog a dead horse. These are the games which do not require more than the presently available infrastructure in the state. Though Athletics needs synthetic tracks but at the same time the simple rather ordinary tracks have produced the Athletes like Jyotirmayee Sikdhar and Rajeev Bala Krishnan (Once the fastest man of India) etc. Despite having the required infrastructure, the state players have not produced any landmark performance at the higher levels of sports and games. The sports like Judo-Karate, Hu-Shu, Taekwong-do or Choikwang-do do not need any special infrastructure which the state does not posses, but the question is as to how many meddles the state has won, and how many stars it has produced in these sports disciplines. So, in these circumstances to talk of lack of infrastructure only, do not carry much sense. On the other hand players like young Ian Dev Singh, Sonia Sharma and Arun Malhotra etc. grew up in the same sports scenario of the state. But with their grit, guts and wits have brought laurels to the state in their respective sports disciplines. So, it is evident that application is the name of the game. Otherwise, gymnastics in which the state has produced the International players and also the International Coach, has the most dismal facilities available in the state. Rather than making lame excuses of not having sufficient facilities in the state, it needs dedication and discipline to excel in any kind of sports. The sports promoters like coaches, mentors, organisers and parents along with the players ought to have a sincere and sympathetic approach towards their specific games rather than they indulge in infighting and criticise others for the sake of criticism. Everything is achievable if done with a will and desire.

Has the state any remarkable achievement in the field of hockey, where the state is having International standard Infrastructure like Astroturf stadium available with it ? It shell-shocks one to see the state has yet to produce an International player in this discipline of sports. To whom to blame ? Is it the hockey association of the state, the highest sports agencies of the state, the players, the coaches or a common man ? None is to be blamed but what is to be learnt is to work together and organise more and more competitions in this asset of the state (Astroturf stadium) to explore, expedite, fine-tune, sharpen and hone the talent of budding players in this field otherwise its life is same whether you use it or not. So, what ought to be done is to make use of it as much as possible and avoid criticising for not having infrastructure in this field.

Except, Raghav Wahi, the versatile young golfer, the state has hardly any other big name in the field of golf, despite having abundant infrastructure in this field. The state possesses lots of golf courses at different places but the number of people involved in this sport and the tournaments held in this discipline are almost negligible. One can guess about the healthy infrastructure of golf by knowing the fact that the state possesses one of its golf courses in the far flung area of hills of Sanasar, 20 kilometers from Patnitop. So, the situation demands the usage of these courses along with their maintenance to see this sport flourish in the state.

Apart from the above mentioned sports disciplines, it is Billiards and Snooker where the facilities and infra-structure available is more than satisfactory but still the state has not produced any quality player of national name and fame. Though one cannot ignore the contribution made by some players and promoters like Kamal Rohmetra, Siddarth Sharma and Sanjeev Gupta etc. for promoting this sport in the state but here again it is crystal clear that the zeal, valour, fervour and vigour is lacking in the people to see the state shine in the field of sports. Otherwise, this sport had made in-roads in the state when it had not much existence in many other states of the country which can boast of many stars in this discipline.

Anyway, sport like swimming has yet to see any big performance produced from any player of the state, despite the fact that it has satisfactory infra-structure and high class coaching standard, especially at Indoor Complex, M.A. Stadium. It seems surprising that the quality coach like P.S. Jasrotia can’t produce quality players of National or even International calibre. Once one goes into the philosophy of things as to why the state hasn’t any better performers in swimming, one finds that it is because of the lack of interest and attitude of the players and parents. There is a trend that the parents send their wards to the swimming coaching centre at Jammu just for two months of holidays in schools, which in simple words means that they do it for entertainment and craze rather than for excellence in this discipline. In just two months or so, the coach can serve the students with just teaching part of coaching not the coaching on the whole. Further taking coaching by installments is simply unfair. Moreover, expecting overnight miracles from a coach is simply meaningless. In such circumstances there is no way to blame a coach rather what is to be cursed is the indifferent approach of the players, parents and promoters.

Hence from the above facts it is evident that the development of sports infra-structure only is not the lasting solution to promote sports in the state.

Hameed equals record in Pakistan first test win

KARACHI, Aug 24: Yasir Hameed completed his second hundred on his Test debut to make cricket history and help Pakistan complete a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh on the fifth day of the first Test at the National Stadium today.

It was the 21st defeat for Bangladesh in 22 Tests but only the third time that they had taken one into the fifth day.

Bangladesh managed totals of 288 and 274 in their innings to which Pakistan responded with 346 and 217 for three with Yasir Hameed scoring 170 and 105 runs

The two hundreds from the 25-year-old newcomer from Peshawar made him only the second man in Test history to score centuries in both innings of his debut Test.

Before him only West Indian Lawrence Rowe had scored 214 and 100 against New Zealand at Kingston, Jamaica in 1971-’72.

Hameed’s hundred came 15 minutes after the first drinks break when he drove left armer Mohammad Rafique to mid-wicket for a single. His century came from 155 balls and in 223 minutes with 14 fours.

Resuming with his score on 68 on Sunday and Pakistan on 112-1, Hameed lost his partner Mohammad Hafeez after they had put on the highest stand for the second wicket (134) by Pakistan against Bangladesh.

Debutant Hafeez scored his first half century in Test cricket, compiling exactly 50 runs from 151 balls and in 218 minutes before he was bowled through the gate by Rafique with the total on 144.

Rafique also forced hameed to play on to his stumps off an inside edge when the score was 170 but by than the match was in Pakistan’s grasp with Inzamam-ul-Haq showing his first semblance of form in a long time.

Inzamam, recalled for this test after being dropped after the World Cup, had suffered a fifth ball duck in the first innings here.

But today he took charge with some crisp shots, hitting Sanwar Hossain for three boundaries in one over as his team moved to victory which came on the stroke of lunch.

Inzamam remained unbeaten on 35 runs and his partner Yousuf Youhana on 15. (AGENCIES)

Missing cricketers pre-planned their action: Manager

JALANDHAR, Aug 24: The manager of the local cricket club, five of whose members went missing on a tour of England, today claimed that the girls’ action was pre-planned but rubbished reports that he had been arrested by the police in London.

Ravi Sharma told PTI over phone from London that the police had infact appreciated his role and said two of the five absconding girls had "offered him money through their so-called solicitor for giving back their passports".

"When I came to know about the girls’ fleeing away on August 12, just three days after reaching London, I waited for them for at least nine hours and then informed the police and the police waited for about 24 hours before demanding the photographs of the absconding girls for publishing," Sharma said.

He said reports in a section of media about his arrest by the British police were baseless and claimed the police have even appreciated his role in the investigation.

"I myself informed the police about the girls having gone missing on the same day," he said.

He said that the two of the missing girls, Rajwant Kaur and Parvesh, had contacted him today and after much persuation they agreed to come to the team within two or three days.

"But other two girls, Ekta and Baljeet, contacted me through their so-called solicitor, who offered me 1500 Pounds each for giving back their passport. But I declined the offer and told him that the girls should come back before the expiry of their visas," he said.

Sharma said the solicitor introduced himself as Jaspal Singh Sidhu from Southhall.

Sharma also refuted allegations that he had taken Rs two lakh each from the girls and even promised a multiple visa of six months. He however said he received only Rs 90,000 from each girl for the 21-day tour of London.

"Earlier also I took the same team to Sri Lanka on a 12-day tour in May this year, for which I took only Rs 25,000," he said.

Sharma claimed that the girls had planned earlier to flee soon after their arrival in London since some of the team members had seen them going with two "Indian looking" men in a car.

He revealed that even before going on the trip, he took affidavits from the parents of the girls declaring that their wards would come back after the tour failing which legal action could be taken against the parents.

One of the team member Sonia said the activities of the five girls, who fled away, raised suspicion in the beginning of the tour when they reluctantly gave their passports to a teammate, Minakshi, collecting those at the London airport.

"Mandeep Virk was the first to leave and two Indian looking men came in a car to pick her up and later on four others fled away," she added.

Minakshi also said "as soon as we came out of immigration office, I was told by the manager to collect passports of everybody and when I was dong the same, these five girls went ahead and even refused to oblige but after sometime reluctantly gave the travel documents." (PTI)

Warne may leave Australia

MELBOURNE, Aug 24: Beleagured Aussie spin icon Shane Warne’s wife Simone has vowed to stand by her man saying "certain individuals" were out to destroy her family.

"I stand by my husband 100 per cent. I always have . . . And will continue to, especially through this unnecessary heartache," the mother of three said in a statement.

"Certain individuals are trying to destroy our family. This will not happen," Simone was quoted as saying on Friday in the ‘Herald Sun’.

The Warnes are expected to fly out this weekend before a new wave of accusations is aired on national television.

A Melbourne stripper will tell her story on the seven network on Monday night. The married mother of two has been paid by seven and new idea magazine to reveal all about her alleged fling with the embattled spinner.

The woman and her husband originally approached the Herald Sun, saying they wanted money before going public with their claims.

The daily refused on the grounds it does not pay for stories.

The unidentified exotic dancer, 38, claims the affair began in May this year and ended last month when she returned to her husband and two children.

Celebrity agent Harry M Miller has been negotiating a deal with media outlets on behalf of the woman for two weeks.

The warts-and-all interview is expected to air in two parts on seven’s today tonight on Monday and Tuesday and hit newsstands later in the week.

Mr Miller told the newspaper that the interview had already been taped and a polygraph test would confirm the 38-year-old’s claims.

"The needle didn’t even waver," Mr Miller said. "I told her when she first approached me that she would have to take a lie detector test, and she’s done it."

The story comes less than two weeks after South African woman Helen Cohen Alon claimed warne bombarded her with lurid SMS messages after they met during an Australian tour last year.

Ms Cohen Alon alleges she was later paid 42,000 dollars by an associate of Warne to keep quiet about her claims.

The 45-year-old grandmother now claims to have photographs to back up her allegations.(UNI)
