Young guns to come under scanner in Triseries opener DHAKA, Apr 10: Though pitted against an opponent which is still trying to find its feet in the international arena, a new-look Indian team will not take the encounter against hosts Bangladesh lightly and aim at starting its campaign in the Triangular series on a winning note tomorrow. Playing their first tournament after an impressive World Cup campaign where they finished runners up, India will rely heavily on the youngsters to deliver the goods as they seek to pick the winning momentum again in the day-night match at the Bangabandhu Stadium. With many of the senior players, including batting mainstays Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid skipping the tournament due to injuries, the teams first international engagement since the defeat to Australia in the World Cup final will be a test of character for the younger members who will now have to shoulder the bulk of the responsibility. Although Bangladesh, who have not won a single limited overs international match since gaining test status, are not expected to pose much of a threat to the confident Indians, Sourav Ganguly and his men will be keen to start on a convincing note ahead of the tougher contest against South Africa, the third team in the fray in the Triseries which has lost much of its sheen with the absence of several top-notch performers. "We want to win wherever we play and we have come here to win the title. Our mission is to win and for that the team is mentally and physically prepared," Ganguly said. Though five members of the World Cup squad have opted out of the tour for various reasons, Ganguly believes that the team still has enough firepower to emerge triumphant at a venue which brings many happy memories for the Indian team. "There are a few youngsters in the side. But I can tell you, they are all talented players and capable of playing good cricket. They have match-winning potential," the Indian skipper said. Apart from Tendulkar and vice-captain Dravid who are carrying finger injuries, pace spearhead Javagal Srinath has also preferred to take rest while leg spinner Anil Kumble could not make the trip because of "personal reasons". Young paceman Ashish Nehra opted out because of an injury which may require surgery. The focus will surely be on the young brigade the likes of Virender Sehwag, Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh who are proven match winners but will now be expected to be more responsibility. Sehwag, who has been appointed vice-captain, has already indicated his desire to play more responsibly after being elevated to the post. The dashing opener was often guilty of throwing away his wicket after getting the starts during the World Cup and it will be interesting to see whether he will curb his natural attacking strokeplay in the early stages of his innings here. players blamed for Paks World Cup debacle ISLAMABAD, Apr 10: The inquiry committee set up to probe Pakistans World Cup debacle today blamed skipper Waqar Younis as well as the other senior players in the team for the countrys first round exit from the mega event. A report released by the three-member committee appointed by Pakistan Cricket Board also came down heavily on the star treatment meted out to speedster Shoaib Akhtar and the "commitment" of the "ageing" players in the side. The committee, headed by retired army colonel and former cricketer Naushad Ali, said "some of our players could not keep up with the pressure of World Cup even though they were old and experienced enough". Waqar, who was replaced by Rashid Latif soon after Pakistans World Cup campaign came to an end, got a "sympathetic" treatment from the committee but came in for a lot of flak for his inability to communicate with the other players in the side. "Waqar is a seasoned campaigner who is straightforward but at times stubborn and struggled to communicate with some of the players resulting in frustration for himself and others," said the report whose release coincided with the new-look Pakistani teams final match against Zimbabwe at Sharjah. "Waqar expected a high level of commitment from his players but unfortunately did not get the same, including from vice-captain Inzamam ul-Haq," the report said. While the committee supported the decision to retain Waqar for the World Cup as he "deserved the job" and had a succes rate of 62 per cent, it was not happy with the fast bowlers performance in the event. "Waqar did not bowl at his best taking only seven wickets at an average of 25," it said while questioning Waqars decision to give the new ball to Shoaib "that might have lessened his own effectiveness". PCB was also not spared for according star treatment to Shoaib. "One of the highlighted divisive factor was the special treatment accorded to Shoaib by appointing Dr Tauseef Razzaq to look after his special physical and psychological needs. This had caused predictable resentment among the team members, especially the seniors." Although the team selected for the event was an experienced one, it was also an ageing squad, a crucial factor restraining it from delivering in big matches. "The average age of the Pakistan cricket team was 28 and-a-half and included five world record holders in Wasim Akram, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Saqlain Mushtaq and Saeed Anwar.... Pressure games require fresh and young legs," it said. (PTI) |
Decision
on contracts issue after working KOLKATA, Apr 10: The contracts issue that has been a bone of contention between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could head for a solution once the new executive committee of the world cricket body comes into existence. Talking to newsmen here Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya said, "no, the ICC has not made any damage claim to us nor have the IDI received any such claim, as far as my knowledge goes, from the sponsors. So the matter stands where it was before the World Cup." Asked if the BCCI was planning to go for an arbitration, Mr Dalmiya said, "first let us see what the developments are and discuss the matter in the working committee meeting scheduled within the next two weeks, only then we can tell anything for sure." BCCI was playing the waiting game, because the ICC general body meeting was scheduled within the next few months in London with a change of guards on the cards. The new ICC executive committee would be headed in all probability by Pakistan Cricket Board president Eshan Mani, a known Dalmiya aide. This would certainly make it easier for BCCI to tackle the contracts issue. The ICC has currently put on a hold BCCIs due from the World Cup as a guarantee against any damage or compensation claim made by the sponsors. "We are happy if we are given a clean chit and our money returned to us. We do not have any problem with anyone and are always willing to cooperate with ICC to solve the issue," Mr Dalmiya said. Other sports in India are also looking up and a good performance from athletes at the international level is expected in the future," said Nehra, while inaugurating a Volleyball and Basketball Academy at the YMCA here. "Cricket has got more impetus than other games, but performances in other sports by Indian athletes has been encouraging. Every game has its peak and lows." Asked about the Volleyball matches the Indian team played during its stay in South Africa, the pacer remarked, "Volleyball was fun. It was a nice timepass." India can climb to fourth in ICC ODI rankings LONDON, Apr 10: World Cup runners up India can move to fourth place in the ICC one-day International Championship table if they win all their matches in the TVs Cricket Cup in Dhaka, Bangladesh starting tomorrow. India are slated to play hosts Bangladesh in the opening match of the three-team tournament that also includes South Africa. The teams will play each other twice with the top two progressing to the final on April 20. According to the ICC, if India emerges victorious without dropping a game, its rating will climb to 107, one higher than fourth-placed Sri Lanka. South Africa, under new captain Graeme Smith, will be hoping to make up lost ground on ICC ODI championship leaders Australia. Prior to the cricket World Cup, South Africas rating was only five behind Australia s but a poor showing on home soil has seen the gap open up to 13 points. Bangladesh also had a disappointing ICC cricket World Cup, falling further behind Kenya at the bottom of the table. If Bangladesh can win one of their first two matches it will boost its rating back into double figures for the first time since January. New Zealander Billy Bowden will undertake his first assignment since being appointed to the Elite panel of umpires. Either Bowden or Aleem Dar from the international panel of umpires will stand alongside a local umpire in all of the matches. (UNI) Jayasuriya resigns as captain of Sri Lankan team SHARJAH, Apr 10: Sanath Jayasuriya has announced his decision to quit from captaincy for the second time in a fortnight, forcing the Sri Lankan selectors to look for a replacement before the home series against New Zealand later this month. The 33-year-old Jayasuriya had resigned immediately after the World Cup but was asked by the Sports Minister to continue till at least the Four-nation Tournament in Sharjah. But soon after Sri Lanka lost its game against Zimbabwe in this tournament, which ruled out its progress to the final, Jayasuriya made it known that the last league match against Kenya would be his last as captain. With the Sri Lankan cricket going through a turmoil, Jayasuriya was not very forthcoming on the issue but he did confirm that it was all over for him. "I am no more the captain, so I should not comment on anything," Jayasuriya told PTI when contacted today. Sri Lankan Cricket Boards chief Anura Tennekoon said he had "heard" that Jayasuriya wanted to quit from the post. "But he has not told us anything officially," the board chief said. According to sources, Jayasuriyas deputy Marvan Atapattu is being considered as the front-runner for the job with the board expected to announce the replacement in a couple of days. Jayasuriya has, however, emphasised that he would continue to be available for selection as a player. Jayasuriya was appointed skipper during the 1999 World Cup after incumbent Arjuna Ranatunga was sacked. He has led Sri Lanka to 18 victories in 38 tests while he has 66 one-day wins in 116 one-day internationals. In a related development, star off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan said he would take on the mantle of captaincy if he is asked to do so. Muralitharan said though he was not in the running for the post vacated by Jayasuriya, he would not be averse to leading the side if no one else was interested in the job. "I am not interested in it. If nobody else takes it, then I have no problem in becoming the captain. But I do not think I will be asked to take over the captaincy," the spin Wizard said. Murali said he did not have any idea as to why Jayasuriya wanted to quit. "There must be something but I cannot read his mind," he said. The champion off-spinner, who has taken more than 400 wickets in test matches, said right now his only ambition was to continue playing for the country for as long as he can. "I want to play for another 3-4 years. That is all. If I am able to do that I will finish with about 550-600 wickets in test cricket and more than 400 in one-day internationals. But I am not aiming at the wickets. I just want to play 3-4 years. Wickets will follow," he said. (PTI) BCCI might use John Wrights services at NCA KOLKATA, Apr 10: The cricket board is contemplating utilising the services of national coach John Wright at the Bangalore-based National Cricket Academy and accordingly the New Zealander might be retained for a longer term and his contract extended by another year. Indicating this here today, BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya said a final decision in this regard would be taken at the working committee meeting later this month. The board president also said that in view of this, the NCA board, which met here today under the chairmanship of Sunil Gavaskar, did not finalise the name of chief coach for NCA. The terms of John Wright and two other support staff of Indian team, physio Andrew Leipus and physical trainer Adrian Le Roux, has already been extended by two months on an ad-hoc basis. But for any further extension the decision has to be taken by the working committee, Dalmiya said. "The matter of extension is under consideration. If it is approved, then Wright and others will be utilised in development programmes in the period after the Dhaka tourney when there is no international cricket scheduled," Dalmiya said. The contract of Wright and others had expired with the World Cup final on March 23 but in view of the triseries in Bangladesh, Dalmiya using his discretionary powers as president and extended their terms till May 24. (PTI) ISLAMABAD, Apr 10: The thrice-postponed 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games were cancelled today after Pakistan expressed its inability to host the regional multi-event competition. The executive council meeting of the South Asian Sports Federation (AASF), which was held at Rawalpindi, has accepted Pakistans decision. The 10th edition of the games will be hosted by Colombo in 2005. "We do not know when the political situation is going to improve internationally. That is the reason why Pakistan suggested the cancellation of the 9th SAF Games which has been accepted by SASF," Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) president Wajid Ali Shah told reporters after the meeting. SAF Games organising committee chairman Arif Hasan said Pakistan was deeply disappointed with the turn of events. "The cancellation will result in loss amounting between Rs 62 and 70 million," he said. The SASF meeting, which was called to decide on the future of the jinxed games, originally scheduled to be held in 2001, was attended by representatives of only two of the seven member SAARC countries besides Pakistan - Nepal and Sri Lanka. India, who pulled out of the games citing security threat to their players, did not attend the meeting. Also absent were representatives of Bhutan, Maldives and Bangladesh. Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi had already informed the SASF that he would not be able to attend the meeting as its "timing was not appropriate". Media manager of the SAF Games Committee Major Yahya said the decision to hand over its chance to host the games was taken by POA after it received necessary instructions from the Government. Asked whether Indias pull-out had a bearing on the decision, Hasan replied in the negative. In fact, Hasan praised his Indian counterpart Kalmadi for "taking the initiative to prevail on the Indian Government to take part in the Islamabad Games". The Games which were originally slated to be held in 2001, had to be postponed thrice. They were first postponed after the September 11 terrorist attacks on USA. The Games were rescheduled and were to be held last year but had to be postponed again due to India-Pakistan military tensions. The games were postponed for the third time last month after war broke out in Iraq. Indias boycott added to the worries of the Games organisers as the competition was robbed of much of its charm and excitement. There was even talk of inviting a "guest nation" to make up for Indias absence. Indias decision also meant financial loss for the jinxed event as the organisers found it difficult to rope in sponsors. (PTI) |
