Jammu Airport backs facilities

Sir,

I am appaled at the facilities that exist at Jammu airport and I am schocked that no one has raised this issue so far. I recently traveled (2/11/2002) from Delhi to Jammu and was shocked to see absence of facility of porter or trolleys. I was told that due to security reasons no one is allowed to enter the airport. Well that is fine but is it not the responsibility of government to at least provide porters and trolleys at the airport ? Why does the Government expect us to drag our luggage to the auto stand which is good about 100 yards away. while on my return on 22/11/2002 I was again in for a rude shock when I was expected to carry my luggage inside from the main entrance with no porter or trolley in sight. while I was managing to drag my heavy luggage I was also stopped midway to open my luggage and repack it and then continue my dragging of luggage all by myself. This is absolutely disgraceful on part of Government and the Airline authorities. Just became ministers and VIPs get a free entry possibly they don't realise the miseries of people like us. I hope they will act and restore at least basic facilities at the airport. Let the Government not give an excuse of providing facilities to women because my wife who travelled on 1/11 and 23/11 had to go through the same ordeal and that too with a 9 month old baby in tow. This is a shame for Government and involved security staff.

Salaam Mr Kalam

Sir,

I salute the President Dr. Kalaam for his decision to cancel the Iftaar party and donate the money towards educating children.

These ostentatious parties serve no purpose whatsoever. Politicians used it to demonstrate their pro-minority image and journalists used it to gorge on free food, while trying to pick up the latest political gossip.

I urge all political leaders to follow Dr Kalam's example and put tax-payer's money to better use.

National unity

Sir,

Today, there is need of joint efforts to make the country strong in all respects. First of all, every one should perform his duty with dedication, as a responsible citizen in an honest way. The political leaders should be secular, and they are required to work for the union of people irrespective of caste, creed, or colour. First we should think for our country and then ourselves. If the sovereignty of the country is safe, we are also safe. Our leaders must work honesty and in a responsible manner so that the people could follow foot-steps of leaders.

Let us take the example of militancy in our State. In the prevailing situation, there is chaos, tension and terror of militants who are bent upon to strike in crowded places, particularly at religious places. In view of recent tragedy committed by the militants, it is not in the interest of the state to release the various leaders of different outfits. There is a need of unity and joint efforts to eradicate the militancy from our State. We have forgotten the sacrifices and dedications of our late leaders, due to the corrupt practices. Moreover, we also not working ourselves. If we say that 50 percent people of our country work and 50 percent people order to others for doing working, it will be correct. I would like to quote an example of an Industrialist of America who came India on his tour. He held a meeting with the Indian Industrialists in connection with Industrial development. While talking, he asked the question'', who was the great Industrialist of India? No body could reply him. When he saw that no one is able to reply his question, he himself told that it was Mahatma Gandhi Ji who was a great Industrialist. Everyone was then taken by surprise. He told that Gandhi Ji said,''who works himself with his own hands he does not fail in any of field that may be Industries, agriculture, or any other field of working''. So, He (American) said we work ourselves and we do not depend upon others, so there is no question of failure in our different fields of work. The Indian people did not learn from Gandhi Ji.

Before concluding, I would request and appeal to the people of my State as well as country to take pledge for solidarity of the country.

Minibus tragedy

Sir,

A minibus having authorised capacity of 25, if loads 61 passengers, then expects to reach destination safely that too while plying in hilly areas is just like putting one's hand in the lion's mouth and expecting that the King of the jungles will be very kind not to bite the human hand. What an inhuman approach of human beings and a most cruel way to ignore the bindings on over loading thus showing complete disrespect to the traffic rules.

The driver of Minibus moving from Doda to Goha, on 30.11.2002 failed to control the super overloaded vehicle while negotiating a curve near Khalaini Nullah and was responsible for the loss of 35 human lives and injuring 26 passangers of course punishing himself also to death. What a professionalism of the driver, greed of the conductor, irresponsible and lethargic but over ambitious approach of the passangers (to board already overloaded bus and not to wait for another bus with available seats), the cruel instructions of the bus owner to have a ''Barhia Trip'' under the complete blessing of Hafta collectors whose fear does not exist in the minds of traffic rule breakers? A shameful act by all of them caused the deaths, injuries which cannot be pardonded by any law and should be ruthlessly condemned at all levels.

To avoid reoccurrance of such accidents, authorities should take appropriate precautions and drastic actions should be taken against defaulters. No one has any right to play with the precious human lives however and whatsoever powerful man he is. Not understood how the conscience of these defaulters (who stand unpunished), in this accident, by the nature) permits them to show their face to the society. Before the law punishes them they themselves should come forward and submit to the Almighty with a sincere prayer from the core of their hearts, 'Oh Lord I regret for all the ills, I added in occurrance of this tragic accident'. From today I will not indulge in any activity which gives a loose rope for happening of such tragic outcome.

Let we all pledge that in the remaining a few days of our lives, we respect, honour and give preferences to abiding the traffic rules rather than the currency notes we collect to help in breaking the law.

Scarcity of water

Sir,

We, the residents of village Satura Gara and Kamad would like to bring it in the notice of the concerned authorities that there is scarcity of potable water in the villages, Satura, Gara and Kamad since one and half months, due to negligence of PHE Department. Poor people have been compelled to drink water from Pond which is very dirty and unfit for human consumption.

Several lakhs of rupees have been spent by the Deptt. on account of repair of machines, but all in vain as these machines often remain out of order.

It is requested to the Government to look into the matter and sort out our problem.
