Weapon snatching bid foiled, cop killed

SRINAGAR, May 11: A cop was killed after militants today attacked a police guard in Wadwan village of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district. A civilian was injured after Army opened fire on youth after they pelted stones in adjoining Soibugh village.
Militants attacked a police post guarding a minority community at Wadwan in Soibugh area today afternoon. A policeman, who was critically injured in the attack, succumbed at a hospital, he said.

The spokesman said that the police successfully thwarted the weapon-snatching attempt in Wadwan.  “Militants today attempted to force their entry inside a Guard Post at Budgam. Militants appeared outside the Guard Post in Wadwan, Budgam and held-up Selection Grade Constable Shamim Ahmad outside his Guard Post who was unarmed and was going to offer Friday prayers at a local mosque in the vicinity,” he said.
“Shamim was asked to lead toward the Guard Post. However, he raised an alarm and the alert jawans inside the Guard Post successfully foiled it,” he said.
The policeman, identified as Shamim Ahmad No 834 Bd (EXK 981992), was a resident of Check Hanjan Yaripora, Kulgam.
Wreath laying ceremony for the cop was held in the DPL Budgam this evening. DIG Central Kashmir VK Birdi led the police officers and jawans in laying the floral wreaths. Besides DC Budgam Mohammad Haroon Malik, SSP Budgam Tejinder Singh and ASP Budgam Majid Malik including other officers from the Police Department and civil administration were present at the wreath laying ceremony.
Shamim is survived by aged parents, wife, three children Shahid about, 21 years old, Muneeb Ahmad about 17 years old and Saqib Ahmad about 10 years old.
Meanwhile, clashes broke out in Soibugh after protesters hurled rocks at Army vehicles heading towards Wadwan village following the attack.
Army men opened fire to chase away the protesters. A youth, identified as Adil Farooq Mir alias Majid Fayaz son of Farooq Mir resident of Galwanpora, Budgam was injured in his right thigh.
Mir was immediately shifted to nearby hospital where from he was referred to Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment.
In the meantime, two youth from South Kashmir’s Pulwama district announced on social media their joining of militant ranks. Zubair Ahmad Bhat son of Bashir Ahmad Bhat, hailing from Chursoo, Awantipora, has reportedly joined militancy. His picture with AK-47 has gone viral on social media. He has been identified as Zubair Ahmad Bhat under code name Abu Hurraira.
A picture of another youth Ashiq Hussain Ganaie son of Abdul Khaliq Ganaie resident of Panzran village of Pulwama holding AK rifle also went viral on social media.
Parents of Zubair had lodged a missing report in the Police Station Awantipora yesterday. However, no missing report of Ashiq has been lodged.
And authorities today imposed restrictions in parts of Old City Srinagar to prevent protests against recent civilian killings in Kashmir.
Restrictions were imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of five police stations in downtown Srinagar.
The separatist leaders – Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Mohammad Yasin Malik – had called for peaceful protests across Kashmir post-Friday prayers against the civilian killings.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who has been placed under house arrest, said that Friday prayers were barred at the central mosque. He said the authorities have once again sealed Jamia Masjid to prevent Friday prayers.
