About two dozens MPs yet to be alloted houses

NEW DELHI, Sept 1: Over three months after the current Lok Sabha was elected, about two dozen MPs are yet to be allotted Government accommodation in the national capital.

At least 23 former MPs are yet to vacate their houses despite being asked to, leading to the situation.

The Directorate of Estate has been asked to do the needful to vacate these residences at the earliest, a senior Urban Development Ministry official said after the Lok Sabha Housing Committee meeting here.

Six former ministers, including Ajit Singh, Girija Vyas, Pallam Raju, Krishna Tirath, Jitendra Singh, Balram Naik, are among those who are yet to vacate their houses despite being served eviction notices.

Former cricketer turned politician Mohd Azharuddin and former prime minister Chandrasekhar’s son Neeraj Sekhar have also been staying put, the official said.

Till now, the Directorate of Estate has managed to vacate Government houses of 243 former ministers and MPs.

Lok Sabha Housing Committee chairman Kirit Somaiya however, said, “There is not much problem as everything (alloting Government houses to MPs) is going on smoothly in positive direction.”

According to the official, former minister Farooq Abdullah may be allowed to continue at his current addresss for some time on security grounds.

Besides, the Government is unlikley to initiate any move to vacate houses occupied by former MPs Agatha Sangma and Jaswant Singh.

While former Minister Agatha Sangma’s Aurangzeb Road house is likely to be transferred in her father P A Sangma’s name, no decision has been taken yet on Singh’s Teen Murti Lane residence, the official said. (PTI)
