Trump to ‘punish’ Saudis over journalist Jamal Khashoggi

WASHINGTON, Oct 14: The US President Donald Trump has promised that the US will inflict severe punishment on Saudi Arabia if the kingdom is found to be responsible for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

He said that he was very upset and angry about the case and indicated that he was not fully convinced by the Saudis’ repeated claims of innocence,reports BBC.

While Mr Trump said he would punish Saudi Arabia,but he won’t cancel arms sales to the kingdom in response, as a bipartisan group of US senators have demanded. “I don’t want to hurt jobs,” he said.

Earlier ,Mr Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, vanished on 2 October after visiting its consulate in Istanbul.

However,the interior minister of Saudi Arabia on Friday said that the kingdom was keen to uncover the whole truth and dismissed all the allegations about ”orders to kill”.

In a statement on Saturday, Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud, the Saudi interior minister, praised the cooperation with the brothers in Turkey through the Joint Investigation Commission and other official channels.

Meanwhile,many theories about the murder of Mr Khashoggi are circulating within the Turkey.

Turkish TV has already broadcasted CCTV footage of the moment Mr Khashoggi walked into the consulate for an appointment to receive papers for his forthcoming marriage to Turkish fianc?e Hatice Cengiz.
