Triumphant soul

Sarika Kapoor
Since time immemorial, Diwali has been celebrated as a festival of good over evil, the ethical over the unethical. It is celebrated with great grandeur and gusto, year after year.
On analyzing the entire plot of the epic, the gist of the story boils down to, a righteous man who gives away all his power, position , riches and owns up to the life of a nomad, just to keep his word, while in contrast another learned man, gives in to his desires of supremacy over a woman and falls prey to his lust and ego.
On introspection, it all comprehends to the fact that, Rama and Ravana each reside within us and are always at a tug of war, now whichever element we give a hand to, that side overpowers the tug. We come across various situations in our lives, which bring us on such crossroads wherein, there is a tussle between becoming Rama or Ravana, though not in the literal sense, yet quite close.
How do we pick one, is always a tough fight, since the Ravana lane seems more tempting, more fun and full of gratification while the Rama route seems drab, heavy and pleasure less. The decision is tough , more so because we are clueless of what lies ahead, yet there is one voice within us, the voice of our conscience or the power of “vivek”, the sense of right and wrong, which guides us through and pricks us whenever we pick the Ravana lane. That one moment where God lands us on the crossroads of life and plays” Kaun Banega Crorepati” with us, by giving usoptions to choose from. Now its onto us to make the right decision, but quite like Amitabh Bachhan, who politely and inertly discourages the contestant whenever a wrong choice is being made, God also in a covert manner, discourages us from making a blunder. Nevertheless, despite the hint, if we fall into the trap willingly, he lets us take the claim and bear the brunt of our own choices.
Though it is quite next to impossible, to lead life as on a black or white track yet somewhere these two colors meet and form a shade of grey and that is what we all tread on, at times we move more towards the darker tones and at times towards the lighter ones. Life definitely gushes on as per our Karma, yet God has left the final choice of picking the right color tone, with us.
If we all individually and as a society pick the right tone and let that one moment of greed, jealousy, lust ,ego , anger pass, there would be no rapes, murders, thefts and certainly no wars.
It would then be a brighter, luminant Diwali for all and in fact each day would be perceived as Diwali. The triumphant soul would be more aware, awake and well lit.
