Tributes paid to Prof PC Mahalanobis on Statistics Day

JAMMU, June 29: The National Sample Survey Office, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, Regional Office, Jammu, celebrated the “Statistics Day” in the conference Hall of Food Corporation of India, 28-B, JDA Commercial Complex, Rail Head, Jammu.
Officers from NSSO (FOD), Jammu and Sub Regional Office, Udhampur participated in the programme. Rajni Charak, Regional Joint Director, Veena Thapper, Joint Director, Ashu Gupta, Deputy Director from Directorate of Economics and Statistics, J&K Government, Dr Parmil Kumar, In-charge Head and some Research Scholar of Department of Statistics, University of Jammu also participated in the Statistics Day.
The theme for the Statistics Day was “Social Development: health, education, poverty, employment, social backwardness, housing and environment”.
The function started with lighting of lamp and paying tributes to Prof PC Mahalanobis, architect of the Indian Statistical System on his 123rd birth anniversary, by Rakesh Kumar Kamra, Deputy Director General, and other officers of NSSO (FOD) Jammu.
Speaking on the occasions, Rakesh Kamra presented a brief life sketch of late Prof PC Mahalanobis and his contribution in the field of Statistics. He also informed the participants about the present Statistical systems in the country and achievement of National Sample Survey Office (Field Operations Division).
Rajni Charak, Veena Thapper and Ashu Gupta, also delivered lectures and stressed the participants for the better coordination between the Central and State Government and to share their expertise for collection of reliable data for the development of the Jammu and Kashmir State.
A documentary film on the life of Prof PC Mahalanobis and success story of National Sample Survey Office (Field Operation Division) was also shown to the participants.
The programme was hosted by BS Bhan, Senior Statistical Officer, National Sample Survey Office (Field Operation Division), Jammu.
The Statistics Day was also celebrated by Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Janipur, Jammu, in its auditorium hall. The welcome address was given by Rajni Charak, RJD Jammu.
While speaking on the occasion, she stressed that a sound and reliable statistical base is essential prerequisite for social-economic planning, policy formulation and performance assessment of Government programmes and schemes in various sectors of the economy.
The vote of thanks was presented by Deputy Director, Statistical Training Institute, Jammu, Ashu Gupta.
