Tributes paid to Major Somnath on martyrdom day

JAMMU, Nov 3: First Param Vir Chakra awardee Major Somnath Sharma, who had sacrificed his life while defending Jammu and Kashmir from tribal invasion in 1947, was paid rich tributes on his 70th martyrdom day.
BJP remembered the supreme sacrifice of Major Somnath Sharma in a wreath laying ceremony on Balidan Stambh near Bahu Fort, Jammu, MoS Priya Sethi, MLA Rajesh Gupta, BJP State general secretary, Harinder Gupta, State vice-president Yudhvir Sethi and Rajni Sethi among other performed the wreath laying ceremony on the Balidan Stambh.
Speakers on the occasion recalled the supreme sacrifice made by Major Somnath Sharma and asked partymen to extend the message of patriotism in every corner of society.
Brig Anil Gupta threw light on the life events of Major Somnath, who was deployed under Kumaon regiment immediately after Independence and died in a fight with the North West Frontier when he was saving the Airport after being attacked by Pakistani soldiers and their 1,000 raiders. The wreath laying event was organized by BJP Gandhi Nagar Mandal.
BJP District Jammu West also held similar programme at Shourya Smarak, Ambphalla Chowk, where State Secretary Sanjay Baru, MLC Girdhari Lal Raina, senior leader Chander Mohan Sharma, District president Ayodhya Gupta, Narsingh Das and others remembered supreme sacrifice of Major Somnath for the motherland in the hour of need.
Shri Kailakh Jyotish Avim Vedic Sansthan also paid tributes to Major Somnath Sharma on his 70th death anniversary by organizing a function, under stewardship of the Trust president Mahant Rohit Shastri.
Large number of people from different walks of life participated in the function. On the occasion, speakers highlighted great role of Major Somnath Sharma, who laid down his life while defending the Srinagar Airport from the attack of tribals in collaboration with Pak Army on November 3, 1947.
Rohit Shastri appealed to the Governor N N Vohra to pay homage to the great personality by rechristening Jammu Airport on the name of Major Somnath Sharma and providing a suitable place to install statue of the martyr in the City of Temples.
Bawa Kailakh Dev Prabandhak Committee also paid tribute to Major Som Nath Sharma today. Shakti Dutt Sharma, general secretary Bawa Kailakh Dev Prabandhak Committee and members paid tribute to Major Somnath Sharma at Thather Bantalab during a function there.  On the occasion, Rampal Seth, Sunil Sharma, Sahil Seth, Dr Varun Padha, K K Seth and others were present.
