Tributes paid to Fire Services martyrs

JAMMU, Apr 14: Fire and Emergency Services today paid homage to martyrs who laid their lives while saving life and property of the masses.
The main function was held at Fire & Emergency Services Headquarter, Gandhi Nagar in which RK Hak, Director, Fire & Emergency Services, was the chief guest. Wreaths were laid on the memorial of the gallant firemen who laid their lives for the noble cause.
While speaking on the occasion, RK Hak, emphasized the importance of the Fire Service Day and Fire Service Week commencing from April 14 to 20. He recalled the most horrific incident of 1944 when on April 11, a ship namely ‘SS Fort Stikine’ carrying explosives, started its journey from Lahore to Bombay and on reaching Bombay Victory Docks Port on April 12 in the evening, the ship was engulfed in a devastating fire during the night hours. The entire Fire Service crew from Bombay Fire Services consisting of 66 officials tried their best but could not save anything and lost their lives during fire fighting. In all 800 people lost their lives including 66 Fire officials from Bombay Fire Services.
Hak, elaborating on this year’s slogan ‘Fire loss is national loss – let us adopt fire safety measures’ stressed upon the officers and jawans of the department to play their role in nation’s development by launching massive awareness programmes in schools, colleges and industries to inculcate fire preventive and safety measures to minimize the losses due to fire which will definitely result in the development.
RT Dubey, Joint Director, Fire & Emergency Services, Jammu Range, RC Raina, Deputy Director, Fire & Emergency Services, Command Jammu and Dr Anita Salgotra, Medical Officer, Fire & Emergency Services, were also present on the occasion and laid wreath on the memorial.
Similar function was organized at Fire & Emergency Services, Headquarters at  Srinagar, where Bashir Ahmed Shah, Deputy Director, paid homage to martyrs.
