GOC 16 Corps reviews security situation

JAMMU, Oct 18: Incidents of transgressions along the Sino-Indian border in Ladakh region have come down this year and an effective mechanism has been put in place to tackle any situation, Northern Command chief Lt Gen Ranbir Singh said.
“There has been a relative decline in the number of transgressions (along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh) during the current year,” he said.
He was replying to a question on ground situation along the LAC in Ladakh in wake of incursions and transgressions in the region in his media interaction at Kangra in Himachal Pradesh on the sidelines of a function.
“We have been able to maintain peace and tranquility along LAC in J&K,” he said.
Singh, who was in this famous Himachal Pradesh adventure sport destination for the first inter-services paragliding competition, said the Army has a well established mechanism to take control of any situation that arises along the LAC and each of these mechanisms is effective and working very well to ensure peace and tranquility along the LAC.
As per official figures, incidents of transgressions had risen to 426 in 2017, from 273 in 2016. Singh did not give exact number of such incidents in 2018 so far.
In one of the incidents this year, Chinese had transgressed into Indian territory twice in the Barahoti sector of Uttarakhand in late July. Around 15-20 personnel of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had come 800 meters inside Indian territory in Chamoli district on the morning of July 25.
Meanwhile, Lt General Paramjit Singh, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army’s Nagrota-based 16 Corps today reviewed security situation of hinterland in Poonch and Rajouri districts.
Lt Gen Singh visited Surankote sector in Poonch district and Counter Insurgency Force (Romeo) at Palma in Rajouri district, sources said.
During his visit to the Counter Insurgency Force headquarters, the Corps Commander was briefed about prevailing security situation and conduct of recently held Urban Local Body elections in the region and forthcoming Panchayat elections.
He was also briefed on the actions being taken to ensure a robust counter-terrorist grid to enable continued peace and stability in the region.
The Commander of the 16 Corps, which is popularly known as White Knight Corps, complimented the troops for ensuring the situation remains stable and lauded the local population, especially the Gujjar and Bakerwal community for their support in bringing peace to the region.
Lt Gen Singh also appreciated the civil administration and other security forces for synergized efforts which resulted then in successful conduct of elections.
The Corps Commander interacted with the soldiers and complimented them for displaying high standard of professionalism.
He was appreciative of the measures and Standard Operating Procedures instituted by the units and formations in their area of responsibility and for conduct of operations without causing inconvenience to locals.
Lt Gen Paramjit Singh was involved in the planning of the 2016 surgical strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). He took over as the GOC of the XVI Corps on October 12 this year.
