Traffic cop killed, seven injured as taxi plunges into canal

JAMMU, May 29: A constable of traffic wing of J&K police was today killed while seven others got minor injuries when a taxi they were travelling in, plunged into Ranbir Canal in Kanachak area, after hit by a bus.
According to a police spokesman, the mishap occurred this morning when a taxi bearing registration number JK02AW-9843, which was on its way from Rajouri to Jammu, was hit by a bus bearing registration number JK12-5795 coming from opposite side, at Deharan on Jammu Akhnoor road.
He said in the mishap, the traffic cop identified as Abhant Singh Choudhary, son of Kartar Chand, resident of Nowshera, Rajouri died on the spot while Tilak Raj (65) son of Sadhu Ram of Nowshera and his son Vinod Kumar (32) got minor injuries. “Five other occupants of the taxi including driver suffered only minor nicks on their body and even did not take first aid”, he added.
The spokesman further said that after completing all medico-legal formalities the body of the deceased cop was handed over to his legal heirs for last rites while the two injured were under treatment at Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu.
“A case in this connection was registered at police station Kanachak and efforts were on to nab the absconding bus driver while both the vehicles involved in the mishap have been seized”, he added.
