Theft of gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh worked out, couple held

JAMMU, June 23: Trikuta Nagar Police today worked out theft of gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh and arrested a couple.
Giving details of the case, SSP Jammu, Prabhat Singh said that on June 20 one Shaliender Anand, son of Yog Raj Anand of Malhotra Street and owner of Yog Raj Jewellers at Lakhdata Bazar was traveling in Santro Car bearing registration number JK02AS-8128.
When he reached Gandhi Nagar, two young women sought lift from Shaliender, who allowed them as both were his customers. On reaching Vishal Mega Mart at Bahu Plaza, one of the women got down from the car on the pretext of purchasing some ladies suits while the other remained in the car. Shaliender too get down from the car for purchasing cold-drink.
When Shailender came back after about 15 minutes, he found the woman sitting in the car missing. Though another woman who had gone to purchase suits and Shailender repeatedly tried to contact the missing woman on her mobile yet the latter didn’t pick up the phone causing doubts in the mind of Shaliender, who had kept gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh in the boot of his car.
He immediately opened the boot and found the briefcase containing gold ornaments missing. Accordingly, a case was registered at Trikuta Nagar Police Station and investigation started.
During the course of investigation, police team headed by SDPO East, S S Sambyal and comprising SHO Inspector Sunil Singh Jasrotia and SI Imtiyaz Ahmed got the lead about the thieves and their hideout.
Accordingly, a police party headed by SI Imtiyaz Ahmed was deputed to Banihal and a couple Ramesh Lal, son of Mohan Lal of Channi Rama and his wife Meena Kumari was arrested and brought to Jammu for questioning.
During sustained interrogation, the arrested couple confessed involvement in the crime. They revealed that they had prior information about goldsmith having kept jewellery in his car. When Meena Kumari decamped with gold ornaments from the car of Shailender, her husband, who was chasing them in another vehicle, picked her and duo left for Banihal after keeping the stolen jewellery at their rented accommodation.
On their disclosure, police recovered the gold ornaments and later restored the same to the goldsmith.
It is pertinent to mention here that Jammu East Police has made recovery of about Rs 50 lakh within two months in theft and burglary cases.
