RAJOURI, Mar 3: Thannamandi agitation was called off this evening with intervention of District Administration while new Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) MA Mirza assumed charge in presence of public, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Avtar Singh Chib and other senior police and civil officers.
The SDM office was opened on the 5th day today after marathon meeting between the Additional DC and other officers with the people staging protest dharna outside the office complex. The ADC who reached the SDM office complex in the morning started holding discussion with the protesting public. In two rounds of meeting the issues was resolved.
The ADC asked the people that both Afzal Mirza and Qayoom Mir were the local officers. It was Govt order of new posting and if they will not be satisfied with the working of Mirza, he will be lifted. Moreover, matter has been communicated to the Govt and if new order arrives, Mirza will automatically go back. He also said that with the closure of office for the last five days the public was suffering.
With the intervention of ADC, the people shelved the fast unto death agitation also. The SDM office was allowed to open. The new SDM Mohd Afzal Mirza joined his duty at around 5 pm and the agitation was called off.
Meanwhile, as the talks were going on between the public and the officers, a youth Abdul Rashid, son of Abdul Aziz, resident of Behrote, sprinkled kerosene oil at the venue and tried to commit self immolation. He was however, over powered by the other people. The police has taken cognizance of the matter.
