Terrorism- most overwhelming threat

Disturbing peace, striking astoundingly, undermining development, unsettling prosperity, exploding hatred and annoying humanity are the goals of terrorism and wherever it raised its head, it spilled innocents’ blood and resulted only in damages and destruction. Whether or not, terrorism laced with extreme fanaticism was fighting its last battle now, that too under disguise and through acts of cowardice, the fact is that the entire world is one in fighting the scourge to its finish. Till the time, it is imperative that all countries assumed their national responsibilities and worked together in close cooperation realising that terrorism was the immediate and overwhelming threat to peace, prosperity and economic development. Centring round these vital issues, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj urged the members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) including Pakistan, to cooperate with each other keeping the nuances of terrorism, manner and techniques adopted by it in view.
Readers may recall the irritating and vexed USD 50 billion China -Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which Pakistan is boastful about but our country has been taking it as an affront since that involves vital question of infringing on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. India has resisted and questioned the said corridor as China had used parts of occupied Kashmir which belonged to India and has built it right up to Pakistan. Sushma referred to that issue by suggesting that all connectivity initiatives should be based on accepted norms of bilateral respect for each other’s interests, sovereignty, consultations, transparency, viability and sustainability. She was attending a two day conclave of the SCOs Council of Heads of Government in Dushanbe Tajikistan where the main issue of terrorism was dwelt with by India being the worst hit for three decades in a row from a country which was born out of this country only.
In presence of Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Mahmood Qureshi, Sushma Swaraj made it clear that as footprints of terrorism expand, Governments must assume critical roles to play and feel national responsibility in added measure to combat it. That, the era of globalisation and countries getting closer now as never before, was mainly on account of economic and commercial benefits, the need is to evaluate how each country benefitted. As the world community under globalisation was moving ahead, respecting one another’s importance and sharing economic interests, terrorism and terror acts were antidotes to prosperity and overall development and needed to be contained vigorously. Perhaps, with this background, a joint move with more commitment by the member countries of the SCOs was envisaged and Indian view with clarity and no ambiguity was manifest in the address of the Indian External Affairs Minister.
Trade, investment and cooperation are the mantras of the countries and furthering ties to achieve these ends was the need of the hour. Sushma, as such pleaded for trade and investment cooperation. It may be recalled that in this connection, India, pursuing a reforms regime, has been supporting an open and stable international trade regime. It is based on the importance and the pivotal role played by the World Trade Organisation.
