Tension over land dispute; people protest, block road

MENDHAR, May 18: Tension erupted in Harni area of Mendhar after members of a family, supported by their relatives and some villagers blocked Mendhar-Surankote road   and held  protest demonstration against police for supporting a police officer in grabbing `disputed’ land.
They were protesting against Mendhar and Gursai police for their failure to maintain status quo, despite the fact that Tehsildar Mendhar and SDPO had gone to the area-Harmutta and had imposed restrictions on both the parties for entering into the disputed land at the village.
The protesting villagers alleged that despite restriction of the Magistrate under Section 145 CrPC,  police officer Mohd Rafiq (DySP) and his family members barged into the land last night and started   illegal construction on the said land. And this all happened when a police party had already been deployed at the site by the Magistrate.  While that land is in the possession of Ghulam Fatima,  the DySP, claims that he has purchased 12 kanals of land from the close relative of  Fatima, who is no more.
The road remained blocked from 9 am to 4 pm. The people shouted loud slogans against SDPO, SSP Poonch and DIG and alleged that local police was helping their own officer.  Later, SDPO Mendhar, Riaz Tantray  and SHO Gursai Charanjeet Singh went to the protesting people and pacified them assuring action against cops deployed at the site last night. The people demanded that FIR be registered against the DSP who himself was at the spot last night along with others. The road was restored at around 4 pm.
