Team to be constituted for fool-proof security of doctors: Taj

JAMMU, Apr 1: Owing to the violent attendants-doctors clash, the atmosphere remained charged up today at Government Medical College (GMC) and Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital as Junior Doctors suspended work to express their anguish.
The junior doctors decided to continue their strike and the decision to resume their duties will be taken in the general body meeting of the Junior Doctors Association (JDA) tomorrow.
Not only the work remained paralyzed in the hospitals, but patients coming from the far-flung areas of the State also had to face hardships, while many of them were immediately shifted by their kin to private clinics after sensing the situation taking a serious turn.
The junior doctors went on strike last night, when the aggrieved family members of deceased Farooq Khan (45), son of Sakhi Mohd, resident of tehsil Mendhar, district Poonch, went on rampage, smashed the tables and chairs kept in the doctor’s cabin and assaulted three junior doctors namely Minal Uppal, Ashwani Raina and Pankaj Singh and a nurse.
Some senior officials including Deputy Registrar and SP North also visited the GMC hospital and tried to pacify the agitating junior doctors, but failed.
Later, Minister for Medical Education Taj Mohi-ud-Din held a meeting with the Junior Doctors Association (JDA) leaders including Dr Sandeep Singh, president, Dr Anchal Kotwal, general secretary, Dr Satinder Singh, ex-president, JDA, Vinod Khajuria, vice president. Besides Principal Dr Aniece Choudhary, Medical Superintendent, IGP Jammu, DIG, acting SSP and SP City were also present.
During the meeting, JDA leaders demanded suspension of SHO Bakshi Nagar, vis-à-vis incharge police post, GMC hospital, lodging of FIR by hospital administration against the people involved in manhandling and assaulting doctors and strict action against them, adequate security staff in emergency and in-patient wards at all time, replacement of JKP by CRPF and verbal or physical abuse, attack/ assault on the doctors should be made non-bailable offence.
Minister assured JDA leaders that their demands will be redressed shortly. He also assured that full security will be provided to the doctors, for which a team will be constituted, who will work out for providing fool-proof security cover to the doctors.
The team will comprise of JDA leaders, DIG level police officials and two officials from hospital administration side.
The Principal, GMC, Dr Aniece Choudhary appealed to the striking doctors to resume their duties in the interest of the patient care.
Meanwhile, para-medical staff also suspended work for couple of hours after some family members of a patient namely Ram Krishan of RS Pura, who died in the hospital this afternoon, assaulted a pharmacist.
After compromise between the family members and the Para medical staff, the body was handed over to former for last rites after completion of legal formalities and staff resumed their duties, Pardeep Sharma, president, Medical Employees Association said.
