Teachers are architects of society: Bhalla

Minister for Relief, Revenue and Rehabilitation, Raman Bhalla alongwith Prof Satya Narayan and K K Bhat during Orientation Programme at Jammu on Saturday.

JAMMU, Sept 15: Two-day Orientation Programme for Academic Counsellors associated with various Learner Study Centres in Jammu city organised by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) commenced today.
Around fifty Academic Counsellors associated with several local Learner Study Centres participated in the Orientation Programme.
On the occasion, Raman Bhalla, Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, was the chief guest, who inaugurated the Orientation Programme. Prof Satya Narayan from Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE), IGNOU, New Delhi was the resource person.
Raman Bhalla in his inaugural address said that teachers are virtually the architects of society. He appraised the role of Open and Distance Education in general and IGNOU in particular. The Distance Education has made us overcome the derailed path of education to a large extent, Bhalla added.
Minister took a serious note of land and accommodation problem for the IGNOU Regional Centre at Jammu and said that he will take up the matter with the concerned authorities.
On the first day of the programme, Prof Satya Narayan had an interactive session with the Academic Counsellors and also discussed about assessment and evaluation in Distance Education, particularly IGNOU through Power point presentations.
Several issues pertaining to Student Support Services were discussed in view of improving the support services being provided to the students of IGNOU through various Learner Centres.
Regional Director, IGNOU, KK Bhat, stressed on the need to improve student support services in the region and urged the Academic Counsellors to provide quality support to students in terms of Academic Counselling, guiding dissertations, fieldwork and other related components of their respective programmes of study.
