Tax evasion attempt foiled, CTD imposes Rs 15 lakh penalty

JAMMU, Aug 1: Commercial Taxes Department (CTD) has foiled a major attempt of tax evasion at Lower Munda checkpost and seized a bulk quantity of hardware, water pumps, sanitary related items and nails.
Giving details, Commercial Taxes Officer checkpost, Lower Munda, Hamid Ganai said that a vehicle bearing registration number JK03D-6685 was intercepted at the checkpost and was put under thorough physical inspection.
After the physical check it was established that the transporter namely M/s Papu Choudary Transport Company Delhi in nexus with dealer has hidden a bulk quantity of hardware and other sanitary related items under the M/s Pipes and goods were without any document, he added.
He stated that the goods were supplied by a Delhi based dealers M/s A-Star and M/s HB Traders and were consigned to M/s Rather Steel and Iron Industry Kulgam.
After a day long physical check of vehicle huge quantity of excess goods were found in the vehicle which were neither supported by any document nor declared by dealer at first entry point, Ganai said.
He said the goods along with vehicle were seized under Section 67(5), 67(10) & 67(9) A of J&K VAT Act 2005, adding that the market value of the goods was about 14 lakh and a penalty of Rs 15,050,25 has been imposed on dealer and transporter/ driver and the full amount of penalty was recovered from the erring tax evaders.
