Sunil Sharma interacts with transporters, assures to address their issues on priority

JAMMU: Minister of State for Transport, Sunil Kumar Sharma today convened a meeting with the transporters to  discuss their issues and problems in view of the proposed strike in support of their demands.

The meeting was attended by MLC, Charanjeet Singh Khalsa, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Dr Pawan Kotwal, Commissioner/ Secretary Transport, Hemant Kumar Sharma, Transport Commissioner, Sheikh Fayaz Ahmed, SSP Jammu, Suneel Gupta, SSP Traffic Jammu, Nisha Nathyal, Additional Secretary Transport, Ashok Kumar, Regional Transport Officer Jammu, Ashwani Khajuria, Chairman Transporters Union, T S Wazir, Chairman, KMDA, Srinagar, Abdul Qayoom and representatives of various transport unions of the state.

The meeting was held in a very conducive atmosphere and the transporters put forth their view point on the proposed strike and reiterated their demands. They also submitted a memorandum of demands which includes, withdrawal of increased fees/taxes/penalty imposed by the State and Central governments, revision in passenger fare, waiver off passenger tax, withdrawal of passenger welfare fund and local body taxes on national highway, withdrawal of speed governor on all commercial vehicles, waiver off penalty on renewal of transport companies license etc.

The Minister gave a patient hearing to the demands and problems of the transporter fraternity and said that the Government was already aware of their problems and constant efforts are being made to address these appropriately. He, however, assured that the Government will examine their all outstanding issues on priority and amicably address the same. Sharma said that transport is a vital industry in Jammu and Kashmir and Government is committed to strengthen it and safeguarding their interests. He sought their wholehearted support and cooperation in further promoting the ties between the transport industry and government for the overall development of the State and people.
