Sumo operators protest against police, block road

MENDHAR, Dec 6: The Sumo operators and locals of the area today held strong protest against local police and blocked Mendhar-Jammu road for more than two hours.
They were shouting slogans against Mendhar Police and SHO for the alleged torture of two youth and harassment to the Sumo operators. They alleged that two youth Ramzan Sayed (17), son of Mohd Sayed of Salwah and Mushtaq Ahmed-18, son Lal Hussain, from Banola village were illegally detained for four days in the police station at Mendhar and severely tortured. Both were today hospitalized. They were lifted on the charge of bovine smuggling while they were innocent.
The local Sumo operators alleged that they were being harassed by police and being challenged unnecessarily. They raised barricades near Bus Stand and sat on dharna on the road. The traffic remained disrupted for about two hours from 10 am onwards. Later, they moved to the office of SDM and started dharna. The SDM Sher Singh and SDPO Shahid Nahim assured to hold inquiry into the matter and pacified the public. They demanded that SHO Dalip Singh be removed and action should be taken against them. They warned to observe bandh if the SSP failed to take action against SHO. With the assurance of SDM the traffic could be restored on the road.
