Strike affects life in Kashmir

Excelsior Correspondent
Srinagar, Sept 10: Normal life across Kashmir was paralyzed today due to strike called by separatists against the visit of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh during which restrictions were imposed in six police station areas of the city here.
Majority of shops, fuel stations and commercial establishments were closed across the city here while public transport was largely off the roads. Fewer private vehicles were seen plying in city’s uptown and civil line areas. The banks, Government offices and educational institutes were closed on the account of Sunday holiday. Due to strike, only fewer vendors were seen in city centre.

The areas falling under Maharaj Gunj, Nowhatta, Rainawari, Khanyar, Safa Kadal and Maisuma police stations reeled under restrictions since morning. Hundreds of security forces men were deployed in these areas and to enforce the curbs on motor and pedestrian movement they had erected barbed wires, barricades and armoured vehicles at key junctions. The restriction-bound areas wore a deserted look throughout the day.
The strike was also observed in other districts of the Valley against Rajnath’s visit. All commercial activities came to halt in district headquarters due to the shutdown while inter-district transport service was also hit. A police official said the situation across Kashmir remained peaceful today. He said barring few pockets of Shopian district, where two militants were killed in a gunfight, no incident of stone-pelting was reported from anywhere.
