Srinagar International Airport

With the installation of Simple Approach Lighting System (SALS) Srinagar International Airport will be having within next six months the visibility reduced from 1300 meters to 1000 meters. The SALS will be set up on 300 meters of land and further 600 meters of land shall be provided after having feasibility assessment by AAI. A PIL had been filed with the Division Bench of State High Court which had instructed the Airport Authority of India to explain why it would not install the system.
In a recent hearing the High Court has been informed that the work on installation of Simple Approach Lighting System (SALS) at Srinagar International Airport has been allotted to a company and the same will be completed within six months. The Indian Air Force said it had not been possible for the MES to install the system because MES did not have the expertise in the field and would not therefore do it. That is the reason why the AAI looked for a contractor and the deal has been finalized with the stipulation that the work will be completed within next six month. It is satisfying to know that the Division Bench of the High Court took a notice of the case filed with it and the matter has been sorted out smoothly. The system will provide relief to the passengers. Additional 300 meter of land for runway is available and there should be no obstruction to the work being completed by June this year as expressed by the AAI.
Srinagar airport has been given the status of international airport and as such all those facilities which an international airport should have have to be provided at Srinagar airport. Essentially, the idea behind making it an international airport was to facilitate the pilgrims for Hajj who wanted to be airlifted direct from Srinagar to the Mecca with further check up at Delhi airport. Making it an international airport will also boost the trade and tourism objectives. Kashmir handicraft articles can now be transported to a foreign station without many hassles and at the same time foreign tourists can come direct to Srinagar without having to go through the arduous journey over the Pir Panchal Mountains… We welcome all those steps that would lead to making Srinagar airport an international airport in practice as during summer months there is great rush of passengers.
