JAMMU, Jan 10: Senior Police XI registered convincing victory over Media XI and stay alive in the 3rd New Year Masters T20 Cricket Cup, which got underway at Parade Ground, here today.
The tournament in which 6 teams are participating is being organized by Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department, under the supervision of Sunil Kumar Sharma, Minister of State for Transport and Sports.
Earlier, in an impressive and well attended function, the tournament was inaugurated by Sunil Kumar Sharma, the chief guest on the occasion, in presence of  Vineeta Gupta, Transport Commissioner; Ajay Singh Jamwal, Additional Transport Commissioner; RK Bhat, SSP ;Vikas Sharma, Joint transport Commissioner; Abdul Rashid Fani, Additional Secretary Road Safety and Dr.Vinod Kumar, SP City.
While speaking on the occasion, the Minister lauded the efforts of the organizing team in conducting the cricket event on the occasion of traffic week with the slogan- “Derive Carefully and to Live Happily”.
“In feel happy to see cricket event becoming part of Traffic Week. Sportspersons are always the messengers of peace, prosperity, harmony and safety. The masters participating in this event will show mastery in teaching youngsters traffic rules to guide and goad them for comfortable and safe driving. Sports and games are the best media to help people shun drugs and drive safely, which in turn will help in decreasing the rate of road accidents,” Minister expressed.
Earlier, Rajesh Gill, Chief Prosecuting Officer and Coordinator of the tournament presented the welcome address and gave brief note of the tournament.
In the first match, Senior Police XI defeated Media XI by 3 wickets in a well contested match.
Batting first, Media XI scored a modest total of 108 runs in the stipulated 20 overs for the loss of 6 wickets, with Faheem Tak (25), Amit (21) and Jagdeep (16) being the main scorers.  For Senior Police XI, Arun took 3 wickets, while Shamsher Singh captured 2 and RK Bhat claimed one wicket.
Sr. Police XI, in reply achieved the target in 18 overs by losing 5 wickets and won the match by 5 wickets. Nadeem was the top scorer with 35 runs, while Shashi and Vinod contributed 27 and 25 runs respectively. For Media XI, Faheem and Sunil took 2 wickets each, while Jagdeep took 1 wicket for his team. Nadeem was adjudged as man of the match.
The proceedings of the opening function were conducted by Rajesh Dhar, Chairman Media Committee JKCA.
The match was officiated by Sadiq Husaain, Sandeep Manchanda and Vinod Kandyara.
In tomorrow’s fixture, Parade Sports Association will take on Singh Akhnoor XI at 12.30 pm.
