South Haryana heritage circuit to be developed as global tourist destination: Minister

CHANDIGARH, June 9:
The Madhogarh-Mahendragarh- Narnaul-Rewari heritage circuit in south Haryana would soon be developed as a global tourism destination under the central government’s Swadesh Darshan Scheme, a state minister has said.
A sum of Rs 100 crore would be spent on developing the circuit, which begins at Rewari and ends at Madhogarh village, Haryana Tourism Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said yesterday.
He said he had discussed the matter with Union Minister of State for Tourism K J Alphons in Delhi recently.
Another meeting is due on Monday with tourism department officials at Madhogarh Fort, Sharma said.
Located on top of Madhogarh Hill in the Aravalli mountain range, the Madhogarh Fort was built more than 500 years ago by Maratha emperor Madhoji Rao.
Another fort in Mahendragarh district was built by the Marathas in the late 18th century. The Mahendragarh Fort was named by Patiala ruler Narendra Singh in honour of his son, Mahendra Singh.
The circuit has several other historical monuments and heritage sites lying neglected such as Chhatta Rai Mukund, Takht Baoli, Dhosi Hill and Rewari’s Bada Talab and Sola Rahi Shiv Dharohar.
Chhatta Rai Mukund is a five-storey building built by Ray-i-Rayan Mukand Dass, Narnaul’s diwan during 16th century. Takht Baoli is a resort built during Emperor Akbar’s rule. Dhosi Hill is also known as an extinct volcano of the Aravallis.
Sharma said the Haryana government was always interested in developing this area as a tourist hotspot. “Wherever tourism is developed, the area automatically gets developed.”
He said developing the circuit as a tourist destination would provide job opportunities to area residents.
With the development of the heritage circuit, not only the districts of Mahendragarh and Rewari would benefit but the neighbouring districts of Bhiwani and Gurgaon too would gain, he added.
The Union Tourism Ministry launched the Swadesh Darshan Scheme in 2014-15 for integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits in India. (PTI)
