JAMMU, Dec 20: Showing great anguish and resentment against Government over the indifferent attitude of handling issue of displaced persons from PoK, a massive protest demonstration was held under the banner of SOS International – an organization for PoK displaced persons at Maheshpura Chowk in Bakshi Nagar area here today.
The protest demonstration was spearheaded by SOS International chairman, Rajiv Chuni and a large number of Displaced Persons from PoK including men, women and youth joined it. They were raising loud slogans in support of their demands. With the protest demonstration, traffic jam was also created in the area for several hours.
Wearing black strips on forehead, PoK DPs came down on roads to show their pain and resentment. The protest lasted for several hours resulting into choking of old city roads.
Addressing the protestors, Chuni alleged that Government did injustice to PoK DPs who are the first ever victims of J&K problem. He said previous NC-Congress coalition approved package of Rs 9096 crores at the rate of Rs 25 lakhs per family, reservation to the wards of PoK DPs in professional and technical institutes across the country and 8500 jobs for unemployed youths in various belt forces except army. Government failed at every corner in providing relief to PoK DPs. The Govt must ask HRD Ministry to issue notification so that the PoK DPs’ wards can study in these institutes like wards of other Valley migrants.
He said Modi Government has totally failed to understand the plights of PoK DPs even after one and half years of its formation at the Centre. PoK DPs have been cheated at every aspect because Government’s intention has again proved hostile. PoK DPs had great expectation from Prime Minister Modi that he would definitely heal their wounds but Modi too became hostile to PoK DPs. He announced only Rs 2000 crores instead of proposed Rs 9096 crores by previous State Cabinet.
Mr Chuni further said that Urban Local Bodies (ULB) and Panchayat elections are scheduled to be held shortly. PoK DPs won’t cast a single vote to BJP until and unless their demands are fulfilled.
Prominent among those who addressed protesters included Dr Gurmeet Singh, Prof JS Mangal, Lalit Kumar, Roshan Lal, Harbans Sabharwal, OP Khajuria, Sanjay Kohli, Ravinder Gupta, Prof Narinder Sharma and others.
