Sonamarg suffers due to lack of concern from stakeholders: HC

SRINAGAR, Sept 11: High Court today recorded that the Sonamarg tourist resort has suffered degradation due to lack of concern on part of stake holders.
Amicus Curie to the PIL Advocate Nadeem Qadri submitted before the Division Bench of Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmad and Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey that the meadows of Sonamarg for which the resort is known for have been totally vandalized. He informed that left side meadows have totally vanished and right side meadows are decreasing as also the glaciers are melting.
“Sonamarg area has suffered environmental degradation because of apathy on part of stake holders”, DB recorded in today’s order after considering submissions of Amicus Curve.
Court said there are essentially four aspects to the Sonamarg area.The first aspect, court added, is the attraction of meadows in Sonamarg.  “The meadows of Sonamarg reflect the actual nature in the sense that it means golden meadows. The second aspect is the Thajwas glaciers. It needs to be verified whether the glaciers are receding”, Court said and directed the Earth Sciences Department Kashmir University to submit comprehensive report in this regard on or before next date of hearing.
Court directed the Registry to send the copy of the order to University authorities for information and necessary action. The third aspect, court said, also requires attention which is Wild Life Sanctuary and Forest Area.
The fourth aspect which the court recorded as oftenly neglected is Sindh river. Court directed the State Pollution Control Board to submit a report of water-air and manner of treatment of effeulant and sewage.
Court also observed that the authorities lay concern of developmental works but they do not take care about environment.
The orders of halting on constructions have already been passed in the instant PIL. The said petition was filed by an advocate and court re-opened the same in wake of alarming condition of Sonamarg and treated the same as suomoto proceedings in order to save the resort before it become a concrete jungle.
