Something to be proud of

We have no dearth of talent either in the State or on national level. The question is of providing proper environment and facilities to the youth in which they can fully exploit their potential. It is sad that our country of 125 crore people is not able to win even a single gold in Olympic Games. It is a sad situation. Even a small country in Europe is able to win gold medals but the same is denied to us. The reason is that we are unable to tape the right sources and catch the talent young. Eighty per cent of our population lives in villages and it is among the village people that talent remains hidden. If we are not able to    develop our rural segment we will remain deprived of the talent that could have been groomed properly to make the name of our country shine in the Olympic and other international games.
25-year old Chain Singh, a soldier in the Indian Army hailing from village Chainser (Gandoh) in Doda, made his state and his country proud by winning a bronze medal in the men’s 50 m rifle 3 positions at Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea on Saturday. He shot a total of 441.7 points to finish behind two Chinese shooters. Chain Singh comes from a poor family that depends on agricultural pursuits. But after joining the Army he found an opportunity of demonstrating his talent. Like Chain Singh, there are hundreds and thousands of Indians who have the talent and are only seeking exposure. If the Governments at the Centre and in the States seriously undertake a campaign of searching for talent among rural youth in the country, we are hopeful that can get them and train them to change the entire scenario of Indian’s role in Olympic and other international sports and games. India is lacking behind in this area and it has to be changed.
