SMC demolishes 2 dozen illegal shops

Srinagar, Sept 30: A day after Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner, G N Qasba, misled the Chief Secretary on demolition of post flood illegal structures, the Corporation today razed to rubble around two dozen illegal shops in City Centre in Regal Chowk area.
An official of the SMC said that the Corporation demolished all the shops which had come up illegally in Regal Lane on Residency Road in the early hours today.
The official said though the SMC was busy in clearing up the garbage and mess brought in by floods, it will not allow the unscrupulous elements to take advantage of the situation and raise illegal structures.
The demolitions took place a day after media reports about illegal constructions and Qasba misleading Chief Secretary about demolition of illegal structures.
The shopkeepers, whose illegal structures were demolished early today blocked the Residency Road this morning throwing broken glass panes on it. However, they were chased away by the police contingent posted in the area.
The shopkeepers also hoisted black banners against demolition of their illegal shops. It may be mentioned here that these shopkeepers who have been allotted temporary shops were demolishing them and raising concrete structures, taking advantage of floods.
