SAMBA, Dec 18: Senior National Conference leader and former minister, Surjit Singh Slathia today demanded special recruitment drive in Armed and Para-military forces for the youth living within five kilometer of International Border (IB) in Jammu region.
Addressing party workers and general public at village Khour Slarian in Nandpur area of Ramgarh in Vijaypur constituency, Slathia said that border dwellers are living in a pitiable condition, not only because of intermittent shelling from across the border but also due to the fear psychosis which restricts their movement to their land holdings for farming. He said during sowing season, they remain off their lands due to threat of shelling and this affects their economic condition as well.
The NC leader pointed out that Central Government made commitments with the border youth for jobs in the Armed forces but no concrete steps were taken in this regard so far. He hoped that Union Ministry of Home Affairs will take positive steps in this regard. He urged the Governor to take up this issue with the Centre. He also sought expediting work on the bunkers and decision with regard to providing alternate dwelling units for the residents of forward areas.
Slathia exhorted upon the party functionaries and the workers to expand their mass contact programme, identify the problems faced by the people and take up the same with the concerned authorities. On this occasion, Slathia also welcomed new entrants into the party.
Prominent among those who were present on the occasion, included Sarpanch Rampal Sharma, Mohan Lal Sharma, Darshan singh, Asha Kumari, Mohan Singh Patti and Om Parkash Attri.
