SKUAST-J organizes programmes on ‘Weather, Climate and farmers’

SAMBA, Feb 4: Agromet Research Centre, SKUAST-Jammu, organized two farmers awareness programme on climate change at border villages of Chak Dulma and Chak Lala in block Ghagwal, District Samba.
The awareness programme was initiated under the guidance of Dr J P Sharma, Director Research, SKUAST -Jammu.  Dr Veena Sharma, Technical Officer, AMFU, SKUAST-J, made the farmers aware of bi-weekly Agro Advisory and mobile SMS services.
Dr Mahender Singh, Nodal Officer and Incharge, Agromet Research Centre, SKUAST – Jammu, highlighted the use of weather and climate based agro-advisories and stressed upon the farmers to make more and more utilization of GKMS services funded by India Metrological Department (IMD).  He gave detailed information on role of medium range weather forecast in agricultural crops in rainfed as well as irrigated condition of Samba district for farm operation in the area.
Dr Rohit Sharma, Technical Officer (Agro-meteorology) AMFU, RARS, Rajouri, said that more than 4500 farmers have been linked by weather based SMS service run by IMD, New Delhi and are getting regular weather updates.
Dr Sachin Gupta, (Asstt. Professor, Plant Pathology) informed about the role of weather factors on disease development and their management in wheat, mustard, berseem, gram, vegetable and fruit crops. Dr Manoj Kumar (Asstt. Professor, Vegetable Crops) explained about latest techniques of growing vegetable nursery under protective environments and their management during winter season.
V K.Bhushan, Project Director, ATMA, Samba informed about various schemes of State Government for benefit of farmers of the area.
