Shutdown in Kathua, Ramban over ‘sacrilegious acts’

JAMMU :  Kathua and Ramban districts of Jammu today observed complete shut down in protest against alleged sacrilegious acts, police said.
Entire Kathua district including Bani, Basholi and Billawar areas observed complete bandh against yesterday’s sacrilegious act.
Members of two communities entered into clash over the incident while three shops were set ablaze and two persons were arrested for flaring up the tension in the area.    Meanwhile, villagers this morning assembled in different areas and staged demonstration.
“There was a mild protest by locals but the situation is peaceful,” a police official said adding that no incident of violence was reported today. Security personnel have been  deployed in the district to avoid any untoward incident.    However, protests were also staged this morning in Batote area of Ramban district and in Kud, Patnitop areas over the issue.    “Some people noticed pieces of meat lying along the roadside in a remote area of Batote and staged protest following which hundreds of villagers gathered and demonstrated against the act,” said a police official.
Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed along the highway and the hilly areas of Ramban and Udhampur districts as the locals were heading towards the Jammu-Srinagar national highway to block the road.
