Shutdown, clashes in Anantnag

Excelsior Correspondent
SRINAGAR, Oct 8:  For the second consecutive day, shutdown was observed by traders in old town of Anantnag district in South Kashmir today amid violent clashes against alleged police excesses.
All the markets of old town of Anantnag were shut on the call of United Traders Association, an amalgam of local traders, against what they alleged police highhandedness. They alleged that several shopkeepers were detained by police day before yesterday on Friday during stone-pelting clashes while a senior police officer posted at Saddar police station also abused them.
The traders said that they will not end their protest till the officer is transferred from the area. During the shutdown today, clashes between local youth and security forces erupted in parts of Anantnag town during which police used teargas canisters. Police have denied all the allegations of traders.
