JAMMU, May 21: Senior vice president of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC)  and former Minister, Sham Lal Sharma today resigned from his post.
Sharma made this announcement during his concluding remarks while paying tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at party office here this afternoon. He however, maintained that he would continue to work as soldier/member of the party.
Though Sharma’s act  created some uproar in  the political circles of the State,  some party seniors said that PCC  is being formulated and new office bearers are  likely to be announced by the AICC high command  shortly. It could be the outcome of that crucial  exercise within the party.
Sham Sharma when contacted said that he has forwarded his resignation to the All India Congress Committee president Rahul Gandhi and the PCC president as well. Justifying his act,  Sharma said that he had raised certain issues before the party high command with regard to consultation process going on and formation of new PCC, which were not taken seriously by the party leadership.
“I thought it is not proper to stay on this position if his words are not taken care of by the party leadership. Under such circumstances I will not be able to honour the  aspirations of Jammu people. Therefore, I decided to resign from this post. But I will continue to work as member of the party, “Sharma maintained.
Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ghulam Ahmed Mir, however, when contacted said that during function organised at PCC headquarters Jammu today in his presence, every thing was going on normal. Sharma in his concluding remarks on Rajiv Gandhi’s death anniversary function, made this announcement to resign from his post. He said till this evening, he had received no resignation letter from Sharma.
Mir said the process of consultation and constitution of new PCC is going on. Rahul Gandhi is keen to provide space to some senior leaders from J&K who were not given due attention earlier.  The new PCC will be announced shortly.
The PCC chief said,  Sharma did not mention about anything, though they both remained together  for about two hours today. He must have some personal reasons for this decision and something could be there between him and AICC leadership at Delhi.
PCC chief spokesman, Ravinder Sharma, however, claimed that Sham Sharma has resigned from his post only. He is very much in the party and  will continue to serve the party. He is towering and important Congress leader. There could be some differences on the issue with regard to party structure  as process of consultation  on the formation of new PCC is going on. He was not aware of any such issue, the PCC spokesman maintained.
