Septuagenarian among two killed, one injured as Sumo plunges into gorge

RAMBAN, Jan 8: Two passengers including a septuagenarian were killed, while one another was injured when the Tata Sumo they were traveling in skidded off the road and fell into gorge near Chapnari area, falling under the jurisdiction of Banihal Police Station. The ill-fated vehicle bearing registration number JK02-0216 was on its way to Chapnari from Banihal, when the driver lost control over the vehicle and it plunged into deep gorge near Chapnari area, resulting into on the spot death of two passengers and injuries to one another.
After getting information, police team rushed to the spot and started rescue operation.
The injured person was brought out of the vehicle and rushed to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Banihal, where he was undergoing treatment, when last reports came in.
The bodies of the two passengers were also retrieved from the gorge and handed over to family members after completing legal formalities.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Shafi Lone (60), son of Abdul Aziz Lone and Mohammad Shafi Bohroo (70), son of Abdul Ahad Bohroo, both residents of Chapnari, Tehsil Banihal District Ramban, while the injured has been identified as 22-year-old driver Arief Saleem, son of Mohammad Saleem of Chapnari.
A case under relevant sections has been registered at Banihal Police Station and investigation started to ascertain the cause behind the accident.
