SRINAGAR, Oct 25: A seminar-cum-symposium was organized by “We The Human” Forum for Nature and Mankind in collaboration with Department of Environmental Science Government Women’s College Srinagar.
On the occasion, the chief guest was Baldev Singh CMD Peaks Auto Private Limited, while Naseer Ahmad Khan MD Meridian Group of Hotels, Assistant Prof and Environmentalist Rouf Ahmad, Environmentalists Mohinder Kumar, Mushtaq Shah, Gohar Wani, Ghulam Hassan and Mushtaq were also present.
While speaking, Professor Harun Naik, Food Technologist SKUAST informed the gathering that use of toxic chemicals and adulterants in foods, beverages and confectionaries has increased, dangerously causing a number of serious diseases, involving vital organs of human bodies as well as badly affecting the mental health of people in J&K. He said the enforcement authorities neither have the infrastructure nor will stop this menace.
Retd Principal Secretary Law KYS Manhas, Vice Chairman, of the Trust exhorted officers of J&K Food Safety and Legal Metrology Departments to launch a vigorous movement against adulteration and use of toxic chemicals in foods and milk otherwise happening of cancer related diseases in people will spread like an epidemic in coming years.
Earlier, S Prem Singh briefed the gathering about “We The Human” Forum and its working.
Lalit Sharma, Retd Additional PCCF and Prof Sumaira Shafi HoD Environmental Science GCW MA Road, informed gathering of around two hundred prominent citizens and students that excessive sprays of toxic chemical pesticides and colouring agents in apple orchards and agricultural fields is a matter of grave concern. The Government needs to adopt a strict modus operandi to check this menace, otherwise J&K might witness spread of cancer related diseases among people as an epidemic in coming years, he added.
A number of college students and PHD scholars shared their views regarding failure of food safety and other agencies in checking adulteration in foods and milk and use of plastic polythene bags.
Noted environmentalists Nazir Benazir also addressed the gathering and exhorted people to supplement the environment by planting trees.
Mementoes and awards were distributed among students and dignitaries.
In the end, vote of thanks was presented by Mohinder Kumar.
