Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Nov 22: Dr KK Talwar, chairman, Department of Cardiology at Max Healthcare Institute Limited, New Delhi, will be consulting patients in Jammu on November 30, 2014 at K C Mediplex, B C Road, Jammu.
According to Dr Talwar fast food and change in lifestyle were prime reason behind rise in heart disease in India. Talking about fast food and lifestyle disorders, he said a balanced and healthy diet was a thing of the past and addiction to junk food has taken people of this generation away from good health.
The sweets, commonly consumed previously only on festivals or special occasions, have today become a common ingredient of everyday diets. The high content of sugar and salt would make them unhealthy food choices if consumed in excess they could contribute in a big way to deteriorating health today, pointed out Dr Talwar.
The excess load of sugar on the body (glycemic overload) would cause excessive secretion of insulin and other hormones which further precipitated and lead to higher prevalence of several conditions like metabolic disorders, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, constipation, cardiovascular diseases and paralysis.
Meanwhile in a recent survey by the AC Nielsen Company, it was found that up to 75% of the school going children were in the habit of regularly consuming junk food and eat unhealthy food for breakfast.  This makes such children more prone to develop conditions like obesity, behavioral disorders, depression and other lifestyle diseases in future.
According to the expert dieticians, children should be encouraged to take healthy foods like salads, sprouts, poha, idly, upma, fruits and juices so that they develop a taste for such foods. They should also be provided with the grains rich in fiber, carbohydrate and proteins.
Along with dietary education, it is also necessary to curb our unhealthy lifestyles like sedentary habits and consumerist attitudes. Exposure to television and Internet also needs to be restricted.
