Securing border dwellers

Pakistani firing and shelling on our hamlets close to the International Border in the districts of Jammu, Samba and Kathua has become a regular feature. In most recent firing and shelling three persons including two women were killed and many more wounded in RS Pora sector. Pakistan is targeting civilian houses and livestock and damages are increasing. Our security forces are obliged to take retaliatory action whatever it is. Unprovoked firing and mortar shelling by Pakistan is essentially to scare away the population living along the border so that they are forced to abandon their homes and hearths and thus facilitate terrorists for safe infiltrations.
It will be remembered that the BJP had made a commitment during election campaign that if it comes to power, it will take steps to secure the border population against recurring threat of firing by Pakistan. We heartily welcome Home Ministry’s decision to submit a proposal to the Union Cabinet for granting sanction to building of 242 concrete bunkers of modern type along the International Border where border dwellers can take shelter during the firing by Pakistani Rangers and troops. This will dispense with the necessity of these dwellers abandoning their hamlets and homes in times of enemy firing to seek shelter at safer places. The proposed bunkers will be for collective living including the facilities for toilets and cooking in times of need. This is a major step in defeating the designs of the enemy to scare away the border dwellers and thus make infiltration safe and undetected. We have all praise for the brave people living on the border that they remain undeterred by looming threats from the enemy. The raising of concrete bunkers will infuse much confidence among the border dwellers and they will be able to attend to their agricultural pursuits with greater determination. The Home Ministry has already decided to give five lakh rupees by way of compensation to the families that have lost an earning hand owing to firing by Pakistan and fifty thousand to the wounded. Now with the raising of concrete bunkers, they will feel relieved of the looming fear.
