Srinagar, Sept 15: A Government Primary School at Dawoodpora village of Ranipora area in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district has been turned into an apple packing unit after authorities locked its doors two months ago.
Local residents said that none of the officials have visited the building ever since it was locked two months back. “The school is closed and not a single person from the Education Department has visited it. No one is thinking about the future of our children,” said a local resident, Abdul Rashid.
He said for last two months they have been running from pillar to post to save the school but to no avail. “We went to every office but no one is listening to our plea,” he said, adding that there were 21 students and three teachers in the school.  “Our kids were getting basic education and were happy with the staff but the teachers have not shown up during the last two months,” he said.
The school building has now been turned into an apple packing unit as harvesting season has already started in the Valley. The local residents said that in absence of the school, their children have to travel four kilometers to get education at another place. “The problem is that they have to travel through a road wherein wild animals have attacked several people,” they informed and expressed concern over the safety of their wards.
When contacted, Chief Education Officer (CEO) Anantnag, G R Shah claimed that the school has not been closed but clubbed with a middle school. “There were not many children studying in the school and it was clubbed as per the new rationalization policy,” he said but added that they still would look into the matter and talk to local residents regarding the issue.
