NEW DELHI, Apr 18:
The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to file a reply during the day in connection with a petition seeking ban on the convicted MPs and MLAs for lifetime.
A bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, after hearing the plea from Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashwini Upadhyay, asked the Union of India to reply today. A bench of the top court, said, ”we would dispose of the matter likely on July 12.”
The bench was hearing the Public Interest Litigation filed by BJP leader Upadhyay seeking setting up of special courts to expeditely hear all the matters pertaining to the convicted Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly.
The bench asked the petitioner, ”do you have any idea who will constitute the special courts, to this, Upadhyay replied, ”this court.” Then the apex court said, ”why? This is a state subject.”
The Supreme Court also asked him how many cases are pending involving such kind of accused. To this, the petitioner was clueless and could not say anything. Now the case would come up for hearing on July 12. (UNI)
