After erratic and hiccupping power supply in Jammu region, even safe drinking water is not available in many parts resulting into triggering of epidemic like situation. Reasi district is currently undergoing such an unforeseen but avoidable scenario where people are compelled to drink unsafe water resulting into most of them falling victims to water borne diseases. Diarrhea and dysentery like diseases are reported in hundreds of cases. Not only the PHE, but the Health Department must get alarmed over the situation with an immediate aim to salvaging the situation.
District Hospital is virtually flooded with cases of acute diarrhea, inflammatory or bloody diarrhea and non inflammatory diarrhea. Normally such incidents take place , even not so much in number, during rainy season and due to prevalence of unclean surroundings but at this time around, one would not expect such an alarming situation.
It is indicative of the failure of the system, both in terms of availability of safe and hygienic drinking water as also proper advisories from the Health department to put the people on alert so that they exercised caution while drinking water. Providing of water purifying chemicals and tablets and other steps are found nowhere till the situation slips virtually out of control.
Our endeavour is not to sound alarm bells or to press panic button but only to strongly urge the concerned authorities to move into action to redeem the situation to prevent it turning uglier like outbreak of an epidemic.
