Road safety under review

Deeply concerned about increasing graph of road accident fatalities, the Governor called an emergency high powered meeting to consider road safety measures that would reduce occurrence of road accident along the NH-I and NH-II. A high powered central team connected with roads flew in to participate in the deliberations held at Raj Bhavan, Srinagar. This is the first kind of high powered meeting that has dealt with the causes and effects of road accidents over the mountainous roads of Jammu and Kashmir State. The Governor emphasized on multi-pronged strategy to reduce road accidents and desired that all necessary steps needed to be taken in this direction should be taken without delay. Participants agreed with the Governor that it was important to strictly enforce traffic rules and regulations. Some innovative suggestions were considered and approved. Information Technology would be applied for preparing a Comprehensive Accident Data Base Management and Analysis system to ascertain causes of road accidents and to devise effective approaches to eliminating these. It was also agreed to undertake regular Road Safety Audits and addressing all the contributing factors for fatal road accidents; creating adequate wayside facilities for the drivers and traveling public; developing emergency medical services and deployment of ambulances to attend to the emergencies arising out of road accidents. Intermittent checking of driving licenses of the trucks and public carriers would also be undertaken. These are very important measures and if strictly enforced the rate of accident should come down. The Governor has done a great service by involving all concerned including the national team of experts on road safety to ensure that driving along mountainous roads of J&K becomes safer.
