SRINAGAR, Nov 21: Hari Singh High Street Traders’ Association has demanded Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to remove ever increasing encroachment of Hari Singh High Street by the vendors.
The association said that earlier footpaths along the street were encroached upon by these vendors but now about 70 feet of the road is being used by unauthorized street vendors while only left over 15 feet is being used for movement of traffic.
The speaker said that the footpath along the road was reduced to widened the road and it was mutually agreed that one side of the road may be used for parking of the customers so that traffic jam may end on this busy road but then since then widened area has been misused by the street vendors and they have quite multiplied to multi layers.
They alleged that SMC have miserably failed to remove encroachment from either side of footpath and Hari Singh High Street, thus affecting the vehicular and pedestrian movement on the busy road. “It seems that SMC is itself allowing the encroachments, as no action is being taken by them despite the issue was discussed with SMC Commissioner at KCCI office”, they said, adding, authorities always claim to have launched anti-encroachment drives but these claims proved to be hoax.
The Traders association once again appealed SMC to remove the illegal encroachments of street vendors from the road and footpaths and provide them a particular spot in the town so that the normal business and traffic is not halted on the busy road.
