Srinagar, Mar 4: Relatives of mother-daughter duo whose bodies were recovered from River Jhelum after they had gone missing from South Kashmir’s Anantnag district today staged a protest and sought investigation into what they termed as “gruesome murder”.
The bodies of Afroza (28), wife of Bashir Ahmad Shah and her two-year-old daughter Zaira Jan were recovered from Jhelum in Semthan village of Bijbehara in Anantnag district last month after they went missing on February 7 from Nambal village of Mattan area.
The relatives of the duo assembled here in press enclave and demanded fair investigation into the deaths. They alleged that the duo were murdered and termed it a case of domestic violence, alleging husband of deceased woman along with in-laws were demanding dowry from her.
Holding banners and placards, the protesters were shouting slogans like ‘we want justice’ and ‘bring the perpetrators to justice’. They also alleged that the police are not investigating the case properly and once again rubbished the suicide theory. “We urge police to take the case seriously and punish the accused,” the protesters added.
